Iain Jenkins, now leading the hunt for the Sunderland fugitive Meeko, says a breakdown led him to devote himself to animals.

Iain Jenkins, a raccoon rescuer whose semi-detached home in Hartlepool appears as ordinary as they come but is anything but. This is a house that Jenkins shares with raccoons, a parrot and a friendly skunk and previously a whole host of exotic animals including a crocodile in the conservatory.

A parrot has humiliated students at, one of the world’s best universities in a memory test.Researchers at Harvard in the USA compared human memory skills with that of the grey African parrot Griffin. They compared how 21 Harvard undergraduates and 21 as well as local six-to-eight-year-old school children performed against Griffin, who is aged 22, in several rounds of a classic shell game.Tiny colored pom-poms were covered with cups and then shuffled, so participants had to track which object was under which cup. The experimenter then showed them a pom-pom that matched one of the same color hidden under one of the cups and asked them to point at the cup. Griffin used his beak to point. The participants were tested on tracking two, three, and four different-colored pom-poms. The position of the cups were swapped zero to four times for each of those combinations. Griffin and the students did 120 trials; the children did 36.The game tests the brain’s ability to retain memory of items that are no longer in view, and then updating when faced with new information, like a change in location. This cognitive system is known as visual working memory and is the one of the foundations for intelligent behaviour.

NEWS - Jerusalem: Scharfe Kontrollen durch die Grenzpolizei (Magav)
May 9, 2017 - Jerusalem, Israel. Soldiers of the Israeli Border Police (Magav) on patrol in the old city of Jerusalem. The Border Police (BP) was founded in 1949 under IDF command with the task of providing security in rural areas and along the borders. It was gradually transferred to the command of the Police and became the BP. During these years, it secured new settlements and countered infiltration of Palestinian Fedayeen. During the 1967 Six-Day War, the BP took part in the fighting alongside the IDF. Following the war, it was deployed in the West Bank and Gaza Strip and charged with maintaining law and order as part of the military administration. Since then, a major portion of the BP's activity has been in these territories, especially during the years of the First Intifada and the Second (al-Aqsa) Intifada. In the 2000 October Riots, the BP were used as the main branch of the treatment in the events. During the Second Intifada, it a large part in the security activity. In 2005, it participated in the implementation of the Israeli disengagement from Gaza. The BP heaviest area of operation is Jerusalem. Virtually all "soldiers" patrolling the streets of Jerusalem are BP officers. About 20% of all BP personnel are located in Jerusalem. Besides Jerusalem MAGAV also provides security, conducts military operations, raids and arrests on Palestinian people in cities like Jenin, Nablus, Jericho, Qalqilya, Tulkarm, Ramallah and Hebron. The total number of Border Guards is about 6,000 soldiers and officers. (Ziv Koren/Polaris) (FOTO:DUKAS/POLARIS) *** Local Caption *** 05850238
