As an island in the moist, atmospherically turbulent North Atlantic, Iceland is often shrouded in cloud cover and hard to observe from space. And lately, the island is making some of its own cloud cover, as the Earth has split open between the Bardarbunga and Askja volcanoes and spewed lava and hot gas.
The view of the Holuhraun lava field has been spectacular from the ground and from low-flying aircraft. Infrared imaging makes the view spectacular from space, too.
On September 6, 2014, the Operational Land Imager (OLI) on Landsat 8 captured this view of the ongoing eruption. The false-color images combine shortwave infrared, near infrared, and green light (OLI bands 6-5-3).
Ice and the plume of steam and sulfur dioxide appear cyan and bright blue, while liquid water is navy blue. Bare or rocky ground around the Holuhraun lava field appears in shades of green or brown in this band combination. Fresh lava is bright orange and red.

The dense population of Cape fur seals at this time of year attracts the seal's main predator, the Great White Shark. Seal Island and the adjacent waters provide rare opportunities for those who wish to witness attacks by White Sharks on the Cape Fur Seal and to observe social interactions amongst creatures of both species. The island is well known for the way the sharks grab their prey: a shark launching an attack will come up from underneath and hurl itself out of the water with the seal in its mouth. It has been shown that if the seals enter the "Ring of Death" (where the sharks circle the island) on the surface instead of at the murky bottom, they are more likely to be picked off by the faster and more aggressive Great White.

Two unarmed policewomen shot dead during routine incident in Tameside, Manchester, Britain - 18 Sep 2012
Two unarmed policewomen have been shot and killed during a routine operation in Manchester. It is believed the officers were responding to reports of shots being fired. One of the officers died at the scene. The other was taken to hospital but died later. Following the incident 29-year-old Dale Cregan handed himself into police and was arrested on suspicion of murder. Cregan, who only has one eye, was already being sought in connection with separate gun and grenade attacks that killed a father and son in August. Police had offered a GBP 50,000 reward for information leading to his arrest.

Hungry Shark Loses Lunch ... And A Tooth
This Great White shark lost not only its lunch but also its tooth when it attacked a decoy seal.
The hungry shark leapt out of the water to snatch up what it thought was a tasty Cape fur seal in its massive jaws.
However, it was actually a decoy and the over enthusiastic shark bit down so hard that one of its teeth was sent flying.
The moment was caught on camera by photographer Dan Callister off the coast of Seal Island near Cape Town, South Africa.
A large population of sharks patrol the waters around Seal Island, which is home to around 64,000 Cape Fur seals from April to September.
With such an abundant food supply close by, scores of sharks patrol the seas around the island on the look out for young and inexperienced seal pups.
To reach the open sea to feed the seals must first cross these shark-infested waters - passing through what is known as the 'ring of death'.
The predators then catch their prey in truly spectacular fashion.
Approaching from below, the sharks leap nearly vertically out of the waves to snatch seals swimming close to the surface.
The behaviour means that the area is acknowledged as the best in the world to witness sharks breaching.

A woman has spoken of her battle to overcome life altering injuries after becoming only the second female soldier serving in Iraq to lose a leg. Hannah Campbell, 26, suffered serious injuries after being caught in a mortar attack while attached to the Royal Artillery in Basra. At the time she had been working as a nurse in the war stricken country for just four-and-a-half months. On June 18, 2007, the day before she was due to fly home following her tour, Hannah was in a guard room that took a direct hit from an insurgent mortar round. She suffered extensive injuries with the worst damage done to her left foot, with the bones almost totally shattered. Rushed back home, over the next three years she received several bone grafts but was left in pain and confined to a wheelchair. Eventually the decision to amputate Hannah's leg below the knee was made and the operation went ahead last May. Now Hannah is back home in Winchester with her husband Jamie and their five-year-old daughter, Milly.
