Balti porters carry heavy loads for days. Every porter takes at least 25kg, but some take 50kg. They often wearjust basic rubber sneakers filled with fresh grass - to prevent slippage of their feet. Most of them don't have socks.

ZAMBIA
A girl with braids in Mukuni Village. Zabmia. The Mikuni Village is about 30 minutes from Livingstone, home to approximately 1100 Leya people. It's a very peaceful, civil, and clean village founded in the 13th century. We strolled throughout the village, learning about how they live, work, and commune with one another. They build their own tools, crafts, and homes. Their crafts are sold at the end of the village tours where you really have to spice up your bargaining skill! Mukuni Village is an authentic tribal village where thousands of people live and work. In July of each year the Leya people partake in the colorful Lwiindi Ceremony. The local people believe the spirits of their ancestors still dwell in the gorges of the Falls and during the Lwiindi, they offer sacrifices to them for rain. Mars One, an organisation which plans to establish a human settlement on Mars in 2023, issued the basic requirements for its pending Astronaut Selection Program, Amersfoort, The Netherlands - 10 Jan 2013

Mars One, an organisation which plans to establish a human settlement on Mars in 2023. The mission will begin with a landing rover set to launch in 2018 to scour the planet looking for a suitable landing site.
WANTED: Humans To Populate Mars Colony
Mars One is planning to boldly go where no man has gone before.
The non-profit organisation plans to establish a human settlement on Mars by 2023 and has issued requirements for its pending Astronaut Selection Programme.
Successful applicants will have to undergo eight years of training and education before making the journey to their new home on the red planet.
Once on Mars, they will be required to donate the rest of their natural born lives as there is no means of return to Earth.
Mars One has already received more than 1000 applications from individuals who desire to go to Mars.
The company says they're not seeking specific skill sets such as medical doctors, pilots or geologists and state it is not necessary for the applicant to have military training nor experience in flying aircraft nor even a science degree.
While the person has to be at least 18 years old it is most important 'that each applicant be intelligent, in good mental and physical health and be willing to dedicate eight years to training before making the journey to their new home on Mars.'
The Mars One Institute pulled no punches yesterday and said: 'They should realise that if this project is successful, they won't be coming back.'
Former NASA researcher Mars One's medical director, Norbert Kraft, said: "Gone are the days when bravery and the number of hours flying a supersonic jet were the top criteria for selection.
"Now, we are more concerned with how well each astronaut works and lives with the others - and for a lifetime of challenges ahead."

Basic House: A Pocket Inflatable Property
A designer has developed a home - that fits in your pocket.
The Basic House can be folded and carried around, before self-inflating to provide a temporary shelter for four people.
Martin Azua from Barcelona has constructed the portable abode from metalized polyester. It inflates using body heat or warmth from the sun.
He decided that modern homes, full of appliances and possessions, could be stripped down to the bare minimum.
He explains: "This is a basic inhabitable volume; foldable, inflatable and reversible. Ideal for a life on the move without material ties. Having everything without having almost anything.
"Our habitat has turned into a space of consumption in which an unlimited number of products satisfy a series of needs created by complex systems and relations that are difficult to control.
"Cultures that maintain a more direct interaction with their environment show us that the idea of habitat can be understood in more essential and reasonable terms.
"Influenced by these ideas and using the most advanced technology, I came up with an almost immaterial house that self inflates with body heat or from the heat of the sun.
"It so simple and versatile that it protects us from the cold and from the heat when reversed; so light that it floats; and moreover, it folds up and fits into your pocket."

NEW ORLEANS: GULF OF MEXICO BP OIL SPILL DISASTER
05 May 2010. Venice, Louisiana. Deepwater Horizon, British Petroleum environmental oil spill disaster.
Hurry up and wait. Long lines of commercial fishermen wait as representatives from BP hand out four hour basic oil spill awareness diplomas to captains and crews. The diploma certifies the crews as able to assist in the deployment of oil containment booms. WIthout work helping to clear up BP's disgraceful catastrophic mess, the fishermen would all be out of work thanks to the oil spill forcing the closure of their fishing grounds. The handing out of diplomas was a shambles with mixed lists in various bundles taking a great deal of time to sort through. Photo Credit: Charlie Varley/Sipa Press/1005061524 (FOTO: DUKAS/SIPA)

Artisanal gold mine in Tonoir, southern Burkina Faso, West Africa - 2009
GOLD MINING IN BURKINO FASO
With international demand for gold having risen over the past year, this has seen a new explosion of artisanal (small-scale) mining taking place in the impoverished West African nation of Burkino Faso.
With a high number of people in the country, which sits between Ghana and Mali, struggling to get by gold mining is seen as a vital lifeline to many.
The gold mine at Tonoir is just one that has seemingly sprung up overnight as thousands of workers and their families join the gold rush.
With its haphazard and dangerous construction Tonoir is now home to an estimated 50,000 people.
The 'mine' is made up of numerous different shafts; some extend 20m under the surface, propped up with tree branches, as part of an elaborate tunnel system.
Each day workers descend into these shafts for up to four hours at a time, using primitive tools to hack out large rocks that are then hauled to the surface.
These rocks are broken down and then filtered through water troughs in order to obtain the tiny specs of gold.
Mercury is added to bind the gold together and the results are shipped off to be sold in markets in the capital city or further a field in Ghana or the Ivory Coast.
Generally, the same person owns all the mining sites in one region, with a licence to mine being granted by local authorities.
With no centralised control, conditions in the mines can vary widely, with little regulation and no real safety precautions making them a dangerous place for the miners and their families.
There is little or no protective clothing, either down the mine shaft, where chocking dust rules, or above ground where the mercury that is added to the gold can have harmful side effects.
Dynamite is also regular...

ACTOR CORIN REDGRAVE DIES, AGE 70
Corin Redgrave has died at the age of 70.
The actor was part of the famous Redgrave acting dynasty and was younger brother to Vanessa Redgrave.
Following his death a statement was issued by Redgrave's wife, Kika Markham, and his family.
It said: "Corin Redgrave has died today. He was taken ill at home in the early hours of Sunday morning.
"He died very peacefully surrounded by his family. We will miss him so very much".
Redgrave was known for his stage, TV and film work.
He appeared in such films as 'A Man for All Seasons' and 'Four Weddings and a Funeral'.
Notable stage performances include a turn as Boss Whalen in Tennessee Williams' 'Not about Nightingales', for which he won an Olivier Award in 1998.
He also won a Tony when he repeated the performance on Broadway.
Redgrave had only recently made a comeback to the stage, in 2009, playing the title role in 'Trumbo', after suffering a heart attack in June 2005.
His first appearance in the production came just a week after his niece, Vanessa's daughter, Natasha Richardson died following a skiing accident.
As well as being an award-winning actor Redgrave was also known as a left-wing political activist.
He and sister Vanessa were active members of the Workers' Revolutionary party in the 1970s.
