Victory Day in Moscow
Victory Day in Moscow.
Police gather to get ready for handling the security during a concert in Victory Park.
9/5/2008
ItÕs been years since I last travelled to Russia but it remains the most exciting place IÕve visited. I feel a huge amount of love and respect for the country and its people, but also a huge sense of outrage at all the injustice and suffering that occurs. On the trip where I took this photograph, I travelled to Moscow to photograph the Victory Day celebrations on the 9thÊof May, where Russians celebrate the surrender of Nazi Germany in 1945. The occasion is marked by massive parades by soldiers and the police, patriotic concerts and a wonderful tradition of people giving flowers to war veterans.Ê
Ê
[we could add at the end:ÊAt the time of writing, Moscow was considering postponing the celebrations for 2020, or holding the parades in front of empty stands, because of coronavirus fears.]

MEXICO: CHILDHOOD OBESITY
April 27, 2012 ¿ Mexico City, Mexico - Ubaldo Alexis Garcia Lopez, a eleven year old Mexican boy, attends a monthly consultation with doctors while being treated at the Federico Gomez children s Hospital in Mexico City for symptoms related to obesity. One year ago, Ubaldo weighed 169 pounds and was 145 centimeters tall with a BMI of 36,5. He was close to death and had to go to the emergency room where he was diagnosed with chronic severe obstructive sleep apnea hypopnea, Metabolic Syndrome X and acanthosis nigricans. Today he weighs 157,4 pounds and weighs 151,4 centimeters. He has a BMI of 31,1. He has reduced his weight with the help of doctors, a more balance diet and the use of a BPAP machine, which help treats his breathing difficulties. Ubaldo is a young student from a family living in Iztapalapa, one of the poorest areas in the Mexican capital. The poor in Mexico have a difficult time accessing preventive health care and education about unhealthy food. Obesity is a massive epidemic affecting countries around the world. Mexico has one of the highest obesity rates in the world, and public health officials are increasingly alarmed by the rapid rise in child and youth obesity. Mexico holds the first place worldwide in childhood obesity. About one-third of children in Mexico are now classified as either overweight or obese. There is also a high prevalence of obesity among the poor in Mexico. Photo credit: Benedicte Desrus / Sipa USA/sipausa.11143491/1205031400 (FOTO: DUKAS/SIPA)

Top Guns: The Best U.S. Air Force Pictures of 2013
These stunning images show a year in the life of the largest air force in the world.
The United States Air Force has operations all over the world and enlisted photographers are there to capture the action.
The service's specialist Airman magazine has curated the most impactful imagery from 2013 for a special issue entitled 'Year in Visuals'.
As would be expected, the gallery features awesome images of aircraft, but there are also personal military stories including a striking image of Capt. Candice Adams Ismirle preparing for cancer radiation treatment, while Staff Sgt. Ron Blodgett is shown in tears as he embraces his son after returning from a deployment in Southwest Asia.
Managing editor Tech. Sgt. Chris Powell explains: "We pride ourselves on publishing the powerful imagery and videos Air Force photographers and broadcasters produce every day. These professionals travel the world, sometimes putting themselves in harm's way, to bring you the visual story from an Airman's perspective.
"Our goal is to make you feel as close to the story as possible, being right there with Airmen providing security in Afghanistan, a team of Airmen hiking the highest mountain...
