Pictures must credit: California Institute of Technology A headband that can tell if a patient is at risk of a stroke has been developed by scientists. The device monitors changes in blood flow and volume while a participant holds their breath. It incorporates a laser-based system and has shown promising results in terms of differentiating between individuals at low and high risk of stroke. Globally, one in four adults over the age of 25 will have a stroke in their lifetime. It is caused by the blockage or rupture of an artery in the brain, which results in a reduction in blood flow. Starved of oxygen, the brain's cells die rapidly—about tow million every minute during a stroke. Over 12 million people worldwide suffer a stroke every year and 6.5 million die as a result. The condition is the leading cause of serious, long-term disability. The headband has been created by a US team of engineers and scientists from the California Institute of Technology and the University of Southern California. Picture supplied by JLPPA

Pictures must credit: Elemind A headband that effectively turns off the brain to help people get a decent night’s sleep, has been developed by scientists. Tech startup Elemind created the headband that emits acoustic stimulation aligned with people’s brainwaves to move them into a sleep state more quickly. In a small study of adults with insomnia, 30 minutes of stimulation from the device decreased the time it took them to fall asleep by 10 to 15 minutes. Since the summer, Elemind began shipping its product to a small group of users as part of an early pilot program. The company is a spin-off from the USA’s Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the device is available for pre-order. The company plans to collect feedback from early users before making the device more widely available. Elemind’s team believes their device offers several advantages over sleeping pills that can cause side effects and addiction. Picture supplied by JLPPA

Oscar winner Mickey Rourke doubles down on his defense of Alec Baldwin as he launches another ferocious attack on the embattled Hollywood actor’s accusers and calls the upcoming charges of involuntary manslaughter “bull****”. The 70-year-old Hollywood actor, who hit the big time co-starring in the 1986 erotic thriller 9½ Weeks alongside Alec’s ex-wife Kim Basinger, was leaving a Hollywood dance studio on the afternoon of January 25, 2023, when he took time out to make his impassioned comments, which followed on from a social media post last week. He told a videographer: “It is bullsh**, that an actor who is working on the set is handed a gun whose job it is by somebody else to make sure the gun is not loaded. And Alec, if he doesn’t have experience in guns or whatever… usually they dry fire the gun up to six times in front of you. If it is me, I will take it and do it 12 more times. It’s like, he is not to blame. I feel so bad for the girl that died and her and her family, but it’s like don’t put the blame on Alec Baldwin. It is not his fault at all.” Mickey was then asked if Baldwin’s claim that he did not pull the trigger will come back and haunt him. He responded: “Well, if it is a single action gun and you pull the trigger back, I mean the hammer back, and you let the hammer go… it will go off, because single action has a big pin and if he just pulled the hammer back without pulling the trigger and he let the hammer back quickly, the gun can go off. But the f***ing gun should have been tested and there is no way a live bullet should have gotten in that gun, you know. So, you put the blame on Alec Baldwin. Why??? F*** you, that is bull****.” Mickey cut an athletic figure on his outing, dressed in a black hooded top that showed off his toned chest and tattoos. He completed his sporty look with yellow and black leggings, white sneakers and a black headband.
