    A pair of ruby slippers worn by Judy Garland in classic movie The Wizard of Oz have sold for a breathtaking $32.5 million USD / €30.73 million euros.at auction.
    They were used for close up shots of Garland in the 1939 film, clicking the heels together as she repeats the mantra “there’s no place like home” for the iconic ending when she leaves the Emerald City to return to her family.
    One of four surviving pairs worn by Judy Garland in 1939’s The Wizard of Oz, the slippers were sold on December 7 by US saleroom Heritage Auctions.
    A spokesperson said: “They are by far, the most valuable movie memorabilia ever sold at auction.”
    Executive vice president Joe Maddalena of the Texas company said: “There is simply no comparison between Judy Garland’s Ruby Slippers and any other piece of Hollywood memorabilia.
    “The breathtaking result reflects just how important movies and movie memorabilia are to our culture and to collectors.
    “It’s been a privilege for all of us at Heritage to be a part of the slippers’ epic journey over the rainbow and off to a new home.”
    Live bidding opened at $1.55 million USD / €1.47 million euros.
    OPS: Also sold was the witches hat worn by actress Margaret Hamilton as the green skinned Wicked Witch of the East which went for a stunning $2.93 million USD / €2.77 million euros.

The slippers are on sale at US auction house Heritage Auctions in Dallas Texas with bidding due to end at the end of November.
