Chester Zoo has unveiled a new home for some of the world?s most endangered primates.

The (3,607m sq) exhibit, part of 'Islands', the UK?s biggest ever zoological development, has been designed by the zoo?s primate keepers, conservationists and specialist architects from Germany. It is the new playground for the zoo?s group of seven Sumatran orangutans and three silvery gibbons ? including a 12-day-old newborn.

Conservation experts estimate that fewer than 6,500 Sumatran orangutans and less than 4,500 silvery gibbons are left in the wild. The zoo hopes the new area will put a major spotlight on issues such as habitat destruction, a threat which is pushing both species to the very edge of extinction.

Thrill-seeking pensioner Gwyneth Haslock is Britain's ultimate silver surfer. Adrenaline junkie Gwyneth, 69, is still catching waves - sixty years after becoming the country's first competitive female surfer. Gwyneth hits the surf on beaches near her home in Truro, Cornwall, three times a week. The retired council clerk, who has never married, said: "In terms of stand-up surfing I think I am the oldest woman in the country still doing it. "Since I packed up work I have more time on my hands and go out on the board three times a week in winter and summer. "I look in the internet to see what the surf is like and get out on the ocean wave as often as possible. "Surfing keeps me fit in, not only in body but also in mind and I will keep going until my health deteriorates".

Supersize Spaniel Slims Down To Win Pet Fat Fighters Competition
*STRICTLY EMBARGOED UNTIL 00.01 Thursday 4th October 2012*

A dog whose former nickname was 'Jumbo Jack' has been crowned the UK's pet slimming champ for 2012 after shedding nearly one third of his bodyweight.

The seven-year-old Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and 16 other pets have undergone a physical transformation as part of a six month diet and fitness regime run by veterinary charity PDSA.

At the beginning of the competition the Spaniel tipped the scales at 20.5kg - double his ideal weight - and six months on has lost a remarkable 6.4kg, which is 31% of his bodyweight and bringing him to a far healthier 14.1kg- trimming 20cm off his waist.

Owner Rose Welsh, 52, adopted the already super-sized Spaniel back in January of this year, she said: "When Jack first came to us he was morbidly obese and could barely walk.

"I couldn't bear to see him in such a sad state so I took him to the vet to talk about a diet and fitness plan.

"Today he is a different dog and we call him Jumping Jack instead of Jumbo Jack, as he jumps every time he barks now. He is fit, healthy and happy - everything a pet should be - and we are absolutely thrilled."

Jack had been overfed and hardly exercised prior to being adopted by Rose, which had caused him to become deaf, as the extra fat blocked his ear canals. He struggled to walk more than a few steps, couldn't play and couldn't even bark.

PDSA Senior Veterinary Surgeon, Sean Wensley, added: "Having adopted a seriously overweight animal, Rose has done a wonderful job in managing Jack's food intake and safely increasing his exercise. As for Jack, he undoubtedly feels much fitter and happier, and has a greater life expectancy than when he was overweight."

Jack's achievement meant he also beat off 16 ot...

    Supersized Pets Fight The Flab
A pet fit competition run by a veterinary charity will see 18 of the UK's fattest animals get in shape.

Pet Fit Club run by the People's Dispensary for Sick Animals (PDSA) encourages overweight cats, dogs and rabbits to lose weight.

Specialist vets will be guiding the owners of each of these supersized pets on their journey to good health by providing a balanced diet and tailored exercise plan.

The contestants - 11 dogs, five cats and two rabbits - are carrying a combined excess weight of more than 24 stone - the equivalent of 380 tins of dog food, 35 average-sized cats or 50 Yorkshire Terriers.

All of the finalists fall into the category of obese or morbidly obese and desperately need to lose weight to improve their quality of life.

Sean Wensley, PDSA Senior Veterinary Surgeon, said: "Excess pounds can contribute to a number of serious health conditions and, sadly, it does reduce life expectancy. But the good news is that it's never too late to make positive changes to a pet's diet and lifestyle."

This year's 18 finalists include a line-up of pets who have become accustomed to a variety of unhealthy foods including a 'custard cream loving' dog called Alfie; a 10.2kg Scottish cat called Maverick who is 85% overweight; food thief, Deco - a canine who likes cake but is carrying 57% extra body weight; Romeo the Labrador who has a penchant for roast dinners who is 47% overweight.

Lonely Life For India's Only Female Sumo Wrestler
Life can be lonely when you're India's only female sumo wrestler.

In order to practice the sport that she loves 22-year-old Hetal Dave has to quite literally fight every step of the way.

She has no trainer, no training partner other than her brother Akshay and has no permanent sponsor, meaning she has to raise the money to attend international contests herself.

However, none of this has deterred Hetal and she has her sights firmly set on a medal in the upcoming Sumo World Championships in Poland.

At first glance Hetal, who is a strict vegetarian and weighs just 75kg, couldn't look any further from the typical image of a sumo wrestler.

In reality, it is only professional Sumo wrestlers who have the elephantine rolls of fat with which Sumo is most often identified.

Those classed as 'amateurs', like Hetal, often have very different physiques.

Hetal's introduction to Sumo wrestling first came via judo, which she started learning at the age of 6.

When she was 20 she began taking part in sumo bouts with boys at her judo club and found herself beating them easily.

From here her love of the sport grew and in 2008 she travelled to Estonia to participate in the middle weight (64kg-85kg) category in the World Championships.

With no trainer to help with strategy Hetal admits that she didn't do very well.

However, she quickly learnt from her mistakes and when she attended the World Games in Taiwan last year she narrowly missed out on third place.

While India does have its own Sumo Federation it merely puts names forward for international tournaments and offers no other help.

As such, in order to compete abroad Hetal has to organise her own finances, including air tickets and lodging.

'Alligator Whisperer' Jeanette Rivera, Everglades Alligator Farm, Florida, USA - 2009
THE GATOR GIRL OF THE EVERGLADES

She's lithe and beautiful and her boyfriends are ugly and deadly.

As Jeanette Rivera serves up dinner the most powerful jaws in the animal kingdom are wide-open and waiting for her to fall from her perch.

One slip by this 'Alligator Whisperer' and she will become a tasty morsel as 2,000 pounds of pressure clamps around her slender frame.

Flip-flops don't seem to be the best choice of footwear for this potentially lethal dinner date with 200 alligators but it's Florida and the temperature is 90F.

"I feel comfortable seeing my boys dressed like this," says Jeanette, 24, who is dressed in tight-shorts and a figure-hugging vest. "I know they have up to 10 girlfriends each in the mating season and wouldn't miss me at dinner time in the future if I got gobbled up, but I feel safe."

Jeanette, 5ft 2ins and weighing 100lb, doesn't appear that safe in this crowd, which includes 'Long Jaw' who is 12ft long and weighs in at over 700lbs.

Friends in the Everglades call her 'The Alligator Whisperer' because Jeanette has a way of keeping these killing machines very calm - even at meal times.

She teases her boys by dangling fish above their pre-historic heads, causing a chorus of jaw-snapping with such force that it sounds like repeated rifle shots.

"I'm scared to death of frogs," she calls out from her five-foot high platform above the sea of voracious beasts. "I'd rather be in here than be faced with a bunch of frogs in a little pond.

"I love alligators. They are amazing creatures - there's nothing else like them in the world.

"They've got dreamy eyes and platted backs and they are one of our few connections to the dinosaurs."

Then, she throws a fish into the pond and...
