40th Annual National Cowboy Poetry Gathering
January 31, 2025 - Elko, Nevada, United States: Detail of Executive Director Kristin Windbigler's hat. Scenes from the 40th Annual National Cowboy Poetry Gathering. The National Cowboy Poetry Gathering (formerly: Elko Cowboy Poetry Gathering), is an annual gathering celebrating cowboy poetry produced by the Western Folklife Center, that takes place in Elko, Nevada. Organized by a team of folklorists and local cowboy poets including Hal Cannon and Waddie Mitchell, the Gathering started in 1985 as a place where Western ranchers and cowboys could gather to share poems about their lives working cattle. From the beginning, it was clear these men and women had found their tribe, an artistic community that few knew existed. Three decades later, the tribe is now a nation of Western poets, musicians, artisans and storytellers, telling stories of hard work, heartbreak, hilarity, and what it means to make your way in the rangeland West. The "Elko Gathering" was renamed the "National Cowboy Poetry Gathering" thanks to an act of Congress in 1980. (Jessica Brandi Lifland / Polaris) (FOTO:DUKAS/POLARIS)

‘Truth-telling has to happen’: the museum of America’s racist history.
Bryan Stevenson, founder and Executive Director of the Equal Justice Initiative, stands outside The Legacy Museum. Scheduled to open to the public in October 2021, the newly redesigned facility replaces the original museum, which opened in April of 2018 alongside the nearby National Memorial for Peace and Justice. Together, the museum and memorial have brought hundreds of thousands of visitors to the area. Stevenson hopes this new and much more expansive museum will continue serving as a guide for all Americans to “examine our history more carefully, and to understand the consequences of enslavement, mob violence and Jim Crow laws on contemporary issues.”
