RED ARROWS GET DISPLAY APPROVAL
AFTER months of training, the Royal Air Force Aerobatic Team today successfully completed an annual assessment, known as Public Display Authority (PDA). Pictured here are the pilots 1-11 once PDa has been given.
Attaining the status, which involves detailed scrutiny of activity both in the air and on the ground, means the Red Arrows are deemed to have a show that is safe, presentable and representing the best of British. Shown here, the official group photographs taken at RAF Scampton after they received the PDA.
Officially known as the Royal Air Force Aerobatic Team, the Red Arrows showcase the excellence of the RAF and represent the United Kingdom both at home and overseas. The team consists of 11 pilots, nine of whom fly in the display, and more than 100 support personnel and technicians. Each of the pilots has previous fast-jet, operational experience flying the Tornado, Typhoon or Harrier, enabling the RAF to secure the skies and protect the nation and its interests, 365-days a year. One of the worldÕs premier aerobatic teams, the Red Arrows had completed nearly 5,000 displays, in 57 countries, by the beginning of 2019. Flying Hawk T1 jets, the team is based at RAF Scampton in Lincolnshire.

Boris Johnson’s RAF Voyager plane takes to the skies for first time after contraversial £900,000 paint job.
Boris Johnson’s RAF Voyager plane takes to the skies for first time after controversial £900,000 paint job. Image shows RAF Lossiemouth Typhoons while refuelling with ZZ336, Vespina.
Today the newly painted RAF Voyager ZZ336, aka Vespina, took flight on its first operational sortie after its refurbishment.
Departing RAF Brize Norton, the Voyager aircraft flew up to the North Sea, refuelling Typhoons out of RAF Lossiemouth and F-35’s out of RAF Marham.
This will be only the second flight of Vespina, her first coming yesterday when flying from Marshall’s, in Cambridge, to RAF Brize Norton, her home. It will also be a showcase of her ability to conduct dual roles, transporting VVIP’s and refuelling tanking aircraft on exercise.
The F-35’s and Typhoons are currently flying as part of Exercise Crimson Ocean, which has involved the F-35’s of Number 617 Squadron operating from the Queen Elizabeth aircraft carrier for the very first time.
The Typhoon jets are operated by Number 9 Squadron, otherwise known as No. IX (Bomber) Squadron, who are a recently reformed squadron that operated the Tornado GR4 until its retirement in March last year. The Typhoons call Gotham home, Gotham currently a part of RAF Lossiemouth.
Alongside the IX Sqn Typhoons and 617 Sqn F-35’s, 1 Squadron jets also refuelled, and a single Hawk, flown by Number 100 Squadron, out of RAF Leeming, also shared the skies of the North Sea. The jet, a photo whip aircraft, while conducting essential training as part of its sortie, used the opportunity to capture some unique imagery of Vespina conducting its refuelling role.

Boris Johnson’s RAF Voyager plane takes to the skies for first time after contraversial £900,000 paint job.
Boris Johnson’s RAF Voyager plane takes to the skies for first time after controversial £900,000 paint job. Following the arrival of the RAF VIP Voyager “Vespina” at its base at RAF Brize Norton in Oxfordshire on Thursday 25th June 2021, the aircraft undertook its first operational tasking today Friday 26th June 2021, by tanking RAF Lightning and Typhoon fighters during Exercise CRIMSON OCEAN.
After several weeks repainting, the Voyager was confirmed ready to undertake its full operational role of Air-to-Air Refuelling and personnel transport alongside the rest of the RAF Voyager fleet. Taking off from RAF Brize Norton, the aircraft spent most of the day airborne to provide several refuelling stops for the fighters taking part in the joint RAF and Royal Navy exercise. This refuelliung occured off the North East coast of the United Kingdom.
Exercise CRIMSON OCEAN allows the Royal Navy and RAF to train and hone their ability to deliver routine fighter and helicopter operations in a range of environments from the aircraft carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth. Lightning aircraft from 617 Squadron have been onboard the carrier since 9 July when they left their base at RAF Marham in Norfolk.
The aircraft, known as Vespina is also referred to as 'ZZ336', its military registration number, was previously visually indistinguishable from the rest of the RAF Voyager Fleet. The new paint scheme will better reflect its VIP mission and contribution to ‘Global Britain’. The paintwork concludes a refurbishment stemming from the 2015 SDSR.
THE TYPHOON WAS FROM 9 SQN BASED AT RAF LOSSIEMOUTH. F35 AIRCRAFT FROM 617 SQN, RAF MARHAM.
