French region has banned tap water. Is it a warning for the rest of Europe?
Forever chemicals have polluted the water supply of 60,000 people, threatening human health, wildlife and the wider ecosystem. But activists say this is just the tip of the Pfas iceberg.
France, Saint Louis, Beat Freiermuth, eco activist and professionell chemist shows the diagram of the water examinations of Hesingue, a village nearby, which is contaminated with PFAS. His house is located either in Hésingue or in Buschwiller.

Des chercheurs ont mis au point un doigt robotique de type humain capable d’effectuer en toute sécurité des examens physiques de routine
Picture MUST credit: Wang et al / USTC A human-like robotic finger capable of safely performing routine physical examinations has been developed by researchers. They say the device could be seen in clinics and hospitals soon. Doctors use fingers for many diagnostic reasons including to take a pulse, or feel for abnormal lumps under the skin or even more intimate examinations. A team at China’s University of Science and Technology, known as USTC, has created a human-inspired, bendable robotic version to perform routine medical examinations. There has reportedly been plenty of interest around the world, especially as many patients prefer not to be treated by a medic of a different gender. Given the complexities of the human hand, even the most advanced robotic hands are still well behind in matching its capabilities. To achieve comparable tactile sensing, the finger consists of an articulated body and integrated sensors. It has a finger-like, semicircular shape with an internal air-powered movement system made up of a series of channels and chambers. The 129 mm long device bends inward when it’s pressurised as the chambers expand with air. They said It could search for and recognise lumps in some model tissue across a large area. Boris Epshteyn, advisor to former U.S. President Donald Trump, returns to the courtroom after a break during Trump's hush money trial at Manhattan Criminal Court on May 20, 2024 in New York City. Michael Cohen, Trump's former attorney, will take the stand again to continue his cross examination by the defense in the former president's hush money trial. Cohen is the prosecution's final witness in the trial and are expected to rest their case this week. Cohen's $130,000 payment to Stormy Daniels is tied to Trump's 34 felony counts of falsifying business records in the first of his criminal cases to go to trial. On Thursday, May 30, a New York jury found Trump guilty of all 34 counts in his New York hush money trial.

It’s literally slower than watching Australia drift north’: the laboratory experiment that will outlive us all
For more than 90 years, a funnel of pitch in Brisbane has been slowly dripping into a beaker. Nine drops have fallen, now the long wait for the tenth is on.
The pitch drop experiment was first set up by Mainstone's predecessor Thomas Parnell in 1927. Parnell heated and liquefied some pitch, poured it into a sealed funnel, and set it over the beaker inside a large bell jar. In 1930, he cut the stem of the funnel – and waited.
Nearly a century later, the original experiment - which has become the longest running laboratory experiment in the world – stands in the foyer of the physics building in the Great Court. The jar is set inside a protective plastic cube, with an analogue Casio desk clock observing each moment as students and staff wander past. The funnel is held aloft by a brass tripod; at the bottom, a shiny black balloon of pitch hovers above the empty beaker.
On a Friday afternoon in April 1979, John Mainstone, a physics professor at the University of Queensland, rang his wife at home. He wouldn’t be back that evening, he told her. For the previous 18 years, Mainstone had looked after the pitch drop experiment, a long-form demonstration of the extreme viscosity of pitch. For the first time since August 1970, the pitch was about to drip from its funnel, and Mainstone didn’t want to miss it.
Recognised by the Guiness Book of Records as the longest running scientific experiment in the world. The first Professor of Physics at the University of Queensland, Professor Thomas Parnell, began the experiment in 1927. In the more than 80 years that the pitch has been dripping no-one has ever seen the drop fall. There is now a live video feed accessible via the website. The third custodian of the Pitch Drop Experiment is Prof. Andrew White. Brisbane. Australia.
