Release of US citizens from The Gambia
September 19, 2012- Queens, New York: (L-R) Former Prisoner Amadou Scattred Janneh, Rev. Jesse Jackson, The Rainbow PUSH Coalition and Former Prisoner Tamsir Jasseh walk out of JFK Terminal 1 as free men after being held as prisoners in the Gambia, West Africa. Former Prisoner Amadou Scattred Janneh, a former Professor at the University of Tennessee, who held dual US Citizenship with the Gambia, was serving a life sentence for Treason. In addition to him, Tamsir Jessah, a U.S Citizen and former U.S. Military Veteran with dual citizenship with the West African nation was also serving a twenty-year sentence for Treason. With a face-to-face appeal by Rev. Jesse L. Jackson, with the Yayha Jammeh, President of The Gambia an agreement was made to release the two American citizens into Rev. JacksonÕs custody who allow them to return to the United States with Jackson Tuesday night. The two men returned to the U.S. by plane with Rev. Jackson from The Gambia to joyfully grateful waiting family members. In addition, President Jammeh has agreed to extend the moritorium on executions indefinitely, marking a significant gain for Human Rights in the West African Nation on September 19, 2012.
