10-year-old girl gets sunburned after school refuses to apply sun cream on her in Swansea, Wales, Britain - 12 Jul 2011
A 10-year-old has been left badly sunburnt after her school banned children from brining in sun cream. Aimee Bowen's skin turned bright red and blistered after she spent the afternoon outside during a sports day practice at Pennard Primary School, near Swansea, South Wales. Her parents had applied sun cream before she left for school in the morning but the youngster was not allowed to take the bottle with her so that it could be re-applied. Andrew and Victoria Bowen had previously raised the issue of sun cream with the school but were told pupils were not allowed to bring it in just in case any children had an allergic reaction. Mrs Bowen said: "I can understand the situation where teachers cannot apply sun cream to children but for a child not be able to bring their own in when they are ten years old seems to me to be totally ludicrous". According to head teacher Sharon Freeguard the school follows official sun safety guidelines, which were issued in 2006.

Everyone knows cats like mice, mice like cheese and seals like fish, right?

Try telling that to Heidi, the five-week-old seal pup who turns her snout up at the offer of buckets of herring, the staple diet of all rescued seal pups.

On January 21st she was found separated from her mother during bad weather on Heacham beach in Norfolk, but was rescued in good condition and taken to the Sea Life Sanctuary in nearby Hunstanton.

However, on arrival carers were astonished to find that the pup refused to eat any of the herring put in front of her. Her phobia was so severe that they had to blend herring smoothies and force feed her via a tube.

Matthew Fuller, one of the sanctuary's animal care team, told the Telegraph newspaper:

"It's the first time we've ever come across a herring phobia and it's really quite unusual as all the seals get fed on herring. It is probably because it's quite stressful and confusing coming to the sanctuary and she was pining for her mummy," he said. "And herring really smells."

Two weeks down the line and Heidi is starting to show more of an appetite for fish and, once she reaches the target weight of 55lbs in about a month or so, she will be released back into the sea.

A rare pet is so lonely in his new Scottish home that he's been forced to adopt a cuddly toy as his best pal.

Kito is one of the only Kinkajous in Britain and has been left on his own after being taken away from his parents.

With no one else to turn to he's now become inseperable from a cuddly toy lemur which new owner Jodie Lynn got for a pound in a charity shop.

Kito is so happy with his new companion that he tries to feed it, fights with it and even uses it to find out whether strangers are friends or foes.

Jodie, 29, from Aberdeen, revealed: "Kito treats the lemur like his best friend. He loves to take care of it.

"He washes it like he would a little brother or sister and is always trying to feed it fruit.

"Whenever someone new comes into the house he sticks his lemur out of the cage to act as a guard.

"When he realises no one wants to hurt his friend he relaxes and is fine."

Kinkajous are native to Mexico and Brazil and are often known as 'honey bears' because of their long tongues and penchant for honey and nectar.

There are thought to be just nine in Britain. Kito is believed to be the only one being kept as a pet in Scotland.

His previous owner, from Gloucester, was forced to get rid of him when she fell ill.

Kito's parents went to a petting zoo in Motherwell while he was bought by pet shop owner Jodie, from Aberdeen.

She was worried about how he would cope without his family so bought him the secondhand lemur to cuddle on the long journey from England

Jodie, who owns East Coast Exotics, revealed: "Most young animals like to feel safe and secure and we worried how he would cope without his mum and dad there.
