A gel that uses saliva to repair and regenerate tooth enamel has been developed, opening new possibilities for dental treatment.
The bio-inspired material has the potential to regenerate eroded enamel, strengthen healthy enamel, and prevent future decay and could be on the market by 2026.
Enamel does not naturally regenerate; once you lose it is gone forever.
There is currently no solution available that can effectively regrow enamel.
Current treatments such as fluoride varnishes and remineralisation solutions only alleviate the symptoms of lost enamel.
The new gel can be rapidly applied to teeth in the same way dentists currently apply standard fluoride treatments.
The new protein-based gel works by mimicking key features of the natural proteins that guide the growth of dental enamel in babies.
When applied, the gel creates a thin and robust layer that impregnates teeth, filling holes and cracks in them.
It then functions as a scaffold that takes calcium and phosphate from saliva and promotes the controlled growth of new minerals in a process called epitaxial mineralization.
This enables the new mineral to be organised and integrated to the underlying natural tissue while recovering both the structure and properties of natural healthy enamel.

Lots were 100% sold with international collectors and fans registered from 17 countries. The vendors, led by EON Productions, are donating 100% of their auction proceeds to their nominated charitable causes and Christie's is also donating 100% of the profitable proceeds from the buyer's premium.
