There was double delight for destroyers Defender and Diamond as the warships received a warm welcome from families after a landmark deployment.
The two ships sailed into Portsmouth Naval Base 60 minutes apart ¨ñ and a few hours ahead of the nationís flagship, aircraft carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth, which they accompanied for most of the past seven months.
The duo left the city in May, part of a nine-ship force ñ seven of them British ñ with the flagship at the centre on its maiden deployment to the Pacific Rim and back.
Both Type 45 warships formed part of the defensive ring of ships formed around the carrier, fulfilling their principal role, watching out for aerial threats.
But there were also opportunities at times to break away from the core task group and operate independently or with allies, such as Defenderís extremely high-profile patrol of the Black Sea in June.

A son wears his fathers cap to celebrate the successful completion of his dads training and becoming a sailor in the Royal Navy.
Traditionally, the nine-week transformation from civilian to sailor takes place at HMS Raleigh in Torpoint, but with a surge in interest in joining the Navy, an additional course was provided at Dartmouth.
The parade ground of Britannia Royal Naval College in Dartmouth – the spiritual home of the officer cadre for the past 115 years – witnessed a unique ceremony as 34 ratings and 130 officers completed their training.
Britain’s most senior sailor, First Sea Lord Admiral Tony Radakin, welcomed the ratings – who formed a guard of honour – and officers into the naval family as the guest of honour.

The world's smallest caravan towed by a mobility scooter. London,Britain - 18 Apr 2011

Small enough to be used legally on the pavement or inside a shop, the GBP 5,500 QTvan is so named because it caters to three peculiarly British obsessions: caravans; queuing and tea. The tiny caravan is ideally suited to queuing overnight for the sales or tickets for Wimbledon fortnight, and boasts tea-making facilities to make any long wait bearable.According to the Environmental Transport Association (ETA), the QTvan is ideal for the estimated 220,000 people who use a mobility scooter without breakdown cover, and who face the prospect of a very long wait should they suffer a mechanical fault or their battery runs flat. Spokesman for the ETA, Yannick Read, said: (FOTO:DUKAS/REX)

Garry Kasparov
Garry Kasparov, Chess Champion, photographed in London. Born Garry Kimovich Weinstein in Baku, Azerbaijan, Kasparov is a Russian chess grandmaster, former World Chess Champion, writer and political activist.
Kasparov became the youngest ever World Chess Champion in 1985. He held the official FIDE world title until 1993, when a dispute with FIDE led him to set up a rival organization, the Professional Chess Association. He continued to hold the "Classical" World Chess Championship until his defeat by Vladimir Kramnik in 2000. He is also widely known for being the first world chess champion to lose a match to a computer, when he lost to Deep Blue in 1997.
Kasparov announced his retirement from professional chess on March 10, 2005, to devote his time to politics and writing. He formed the United Civil Front movement, and joined as a member of The Other Russia, a coalition opposing the administration of Vladimir Putin. He was a candidate for the 2008 Russian presidential race, but later withdrew.
