Zoo keepers at an Australian wildlife park have risked life and limb in a heart-stopping battle with a crocodile, as they carried out a high-risk dental operation on the park’s most feared resident.
Staff at the Australian Reptile Park came face-to-face with Elvis – the park’s largest, most dangerous and most notoriously bad-tempered crocodile - following concerns that a serious jaw infection could become life-threatening. The mature male measures 4.8 metres in length and is considered extremely difficult to restrain due to his size, strength and temperament.
Elvis has only been captured twice in his 14 years at the park because of the significant risks involved. The decision to restrain him for a third time was made after keepers observed worsening infections in his jaw that could have had serious health consequences if left untreated.
Park Manager Billy Collett said the procedure was the most dangerous operation carried out at the park.
“Catching and restraining a mature male saltwater crocodile carries extreme risk,” he said. “However, leaving the infection untreated was not an option, as it could ultimately have been fatal.”
The operation followed months of preparation, including detailed planning and staff training. Immediately before entering the enclosure, senior staff conducted a safety briefing to reinforce protocols and lessons learned from previous captures.
The capture began with three senior keepers entering the enclosure and calmly luring the crocodile forward using food. Once a rope was secured over Elvis’ upper jaw, the animal reacted with a series of powerful rolls and movements typical of defensive behaviour in large crocodilians. Keepers maintained control until sedation could be safely administered.
Veterinary staff then conducted X-rays of the jaw, which showed that the condition was less severe than initially feared.

An eight-month-old kangaroo joey rejected by his mother and hand-raised by a devoted zookeeper has defied the odds and made a heart-warming recovery just in time for Christmas.
The Australian Reptile Park is celebrating what staff are calling a true festive miracle after Rooster, an Eastern Grey kangaroo joey, survived against all expectations after being thrown from his mother’s pouch and left fighting for life.
The tiny joey was just months old when his mother rejected him — a harsh but natural behaviour that can occur in the wild when a female kangaroo senses her joey is unwell. In most cases, joeys abandoned in this way do not survive without human intervention.
But Rooster’s story took a different turn thanks to the tireless dedication of Operations Manager Brandon Gifford, who stepped in to save him.
“It was a little touch and go as to whether he was gonna make it or not, but now, he’s bounced back and it’s a Christmas miracle.” Gifford explained.
Now thriving under round-the-clock care, Rooster has become something of a celebrity among staff, not least because of his rather unusual name. The moniker — more commonly associated with a farmyard than a marsupial — has quickly become a firm favourite as the joey’s cheeky personality begins to shine through.
“Rooster is the cutest joey you could ever raise,” Gifford said. “He follows me around everywhere I go, loves getting into his pouch and especially loves his smooches and his cuddles.”
Caring for Rooster is no small task. The joey must be bottle-fed every five hours, meaning he accompanies Gifford to work each day and heads home with him every night. The demanding routine leaves little room for rest, but Gifford says the sacrifice is more than worth it.

Researchers have identified what may be the largest spiderweb on Earth — a vast colony of more than 111,000 spiders thriving in total darkness within a cave along the Albanian-Greek border.
According to a study published on October 17 in Subterranean Biology, the “extraordinary” structure occupies 1,140 square feet (106 square meters) of wall surface in a narrow, low-ceilinged passage near the cave’s entrance. The colossal web is formed by thousands of interconnected, funnel-shaped webs, creating a dense, seamless network.
This is the first documented case of colonial behaviour between two common spider species — and possibly the largest spiderweb ever recorded — said lead author István Urák, associate professor of biology at Sapientia Hungarian University of Transylvania in Romania.
"The natural world still holds countless surprises for us," Urák told Live Science. "If I were to attempt to put into words all the emotions that surged through me [when I saw the web], I would highlight admiration, respect, and gratitude. You have to experience it to truly know what it feels like."
The massive web was found inside Sulfur Cave, a cavern formed by sulfuric acid created from the oxidation of hydrogen sulfide in groundwater. The structure was first spotted in 2022 by cavers from the Czech Speleological Society during an expedition to the Vromoner Canyon. In 2024, a team of scientists collected samples from the site, which Urák later analysed before leading his own expedition to the cave.
The research identified two species living in the colony — Tegenaria domestica (the barn funnel weaver or domestic house spider) and Prinerigone vagans. Urák and his team estimated there were roughly 69,000 T. domestica and more than 42,000 P. vagans individuals. DNA analyses confirmed these two species dominate the population.
