    Toxic Waters Of Karnaphuli
September 27, 2025, Chittagong, Chittagong, Bangladesh: A girl collects water from the Karnaphuli River in Chittagong. Industrial waste, plastic, polythene, and everyday garbage are increasingly polluting the Karnaphuli River. Once clear and full of life, the river is now losing its natural vitality due to relentless pollution. With no alternative water sources, thousands of families living along the riverbanks, including those in the Fishery Ghat area of Chattogram city, are forced to use this contaminated water. The water poses health risks, leading to a growing outbreak of waterborne diseases. (Credit Image: © Mohammed Suman/ZUMA Press Wire (FOTO: DUKAS/ZUMA)

Karnaphuli River And The Threat Of Pollution
September 23, 2025, Chittagong, Bangladesh: The lifeline of Chattogram, the Karnaphuli River, is now facing severe pollution. Every day, a huge amount of plastic, polythene, and other waste from residential areas and markets is directly dumped into the river. As a result, the water has become unusable, and the surrounding environment is being severely damaged. (Credit Image: © Mohammed Suman/ZUMA Press Wire (FOTO: DUKAS/ZUMA)

Ground contamination in a village on the Delhi border, India, August 2006. The environmental implications of e-waste recycling are severe contamination of the workplace and surrounding area by a number of toxic metals and persistent organic compounds. Acidification of watercourses and sediments from waste acid makes metals more mobile and therefore much more likely to cause damage to both humans and aquatic life. Waste produced at every stage of the e-waste dismantling process is contaminated with toxic metals.
India has become one of the world's largest dumping grounds for electronic waste, known as e-waste. Thousands of tons are sent illegally each year from western countries including the UK for recycling. It is dismantled by hand, unwanted parts are then dumped or sent to landfill where lethal toxins, such as lead, cadmium and mercury contaminate the environment.

Kurla Mumbai, India, July 2006. A young boy works in a scrap yard in Mumbai. Thousands of men, women and children work in the unregulated backyard e-waste recycling units all over India. In Delhi alone over 10,000 people are employed in recycling activites. Most are unaware of the health implications of handling such toxic materials. They wear no protection againts the harmful chemicals and heavy metals present in fumes and workshop dust.

HOLIDAY HORROR AS COW BECOMES LUNCH FOR TIGERS

These pictures show the moment a group of tourists visiting a wildlife park looked on in horror as their guides fed a live cow to five hungry tigers.

The shocked visitors watched from the safety of their buses as the fearsome beasts launched into a feeding frenzy.

The cow had been dumped from the back of a truck and made a brave attempt to escape before being overcome by the powerful cats.

Amateur photographer Chris Gooding, 31, captured the images on a trip to the Siberian Tiger Park in Harbin, China.

He said: "I had heard that the Siberian Tiger Park was a famous tourist attraction in the area and I jumped at the chance to go.

"After a brief walk through the traditional zoo-like cages and some more spacious enclosures, we were loaded on to one of six buses for the guided tour of the park.

"The park was spread across several square kilometres of land with a meandering dirt road.

"Along the way we saw lions and tigers aplenty mostly asleep in the shade of trees next to the road.

"After 20 minutes the buses formed a ring in an open dirt field where we were joined by several jeeps carrying park employees.

"Clearly this event was anticipated by a group of five tigers who immediately appeared from beneath the adjacent trees."

Dad of one Chris, from Ontario, Canada, said park staff threw meat to the tigers and then released three live chickens and a pheasant.

Chris added: "The athleticism of the tigers was clearly apparent and the crowd were enjoying the photo opportunity.

"What came next, however, was utterly unexpected.

"A large dump truck reversed into the ring of buses while the armoured jeeps drove quickly around the perimeter ...

Piles of refuse gathering on the streets in Campania, Italy - 03 Jan 2008
With local dumps full and communities resisting attempts to create new ones in their areas, the piles of rubbish around Naples in Italy have been growing day by day since a row about refuse started two weeks ago. As refuse collectors have nowhere to take the rubbish many residents have started setting alight to the piles now clogging the streets; this has prompted a surge of calls to under resourced emergency sources and warnings from environment officials about toxic smoke. This is not the first rubbish dispute to hit Naples and the surrounding Campania region; there have been a number over the past few years and the European Union began legal action during the last dispute in June 2007. That case is still continuing but this latest row is likely to trigger a faster response.
