MUSICAL HEAVYWEIGHTS GEAR UP FOR MANDELA CONCERT
Following a dinner held in honour of his 90th birthday last night (25 June), Nelson Mandela has met the artists who will be performing at his celebratory concert in London on Friday (27 June).
The former South African president happily posed for pictures with the singers, musicians and celebrities who will take to the stage in Hyde Park to mark his birthday as well as raise awareness for his AIDS charity, 46664.
Annie Lennox, Leona Lewis, Amy Winehouse - despite her recent health troubles - Queen, the Sugababes, Razorlight, and Simple Minds are all among the artists expected to perform.
Further headlining acts have been lined up as special, surprise guest appearances.
Many South African acts have also flown in to participate in the celebrations. These include R&B star Loyiso Bala, who will be singing a duet with Jamelia.
Kurt Darren, one of South Africa's most popular Afrikaans singers, is also on the bill.
Precisely 46,664 tickets have gone on sale for the three-and-a-half-hour concert, which will be compered by US actor Will Smith and which kicks off at 6:30 pm (1730 GMT).
All eyes are also likely to be on whether Mandela, now retired from public life, elaborates on his "tragic failure of leadership" in Zimbabwe comment that he made during his birthday dinner.
The 46664 campaign, named after Mandela's prison number during his 27-year incarceration for trying to topple South Africa's apartheid regime, aims to raise awareness of the HIV/AIDS epidemic which is rife in sub-Saharan Africa.
Mandela lost a son to AIDS in January 2005 and has now made the fight against the pandemic his main cause.
