An African lion in a Chinese zoo gave birth to five tigons, a hybrid between a tiger and a lioness, and the zoo found a surrogate dog mother to nurse the five cubs in making sure they can all survive. Wuqiao Acrobatics Performance Zoo in Northern China's Hebei province said the African Lion, Di Di, gave birth to the quintuplets on June 15th, 2010. ALSATIAN ACTS AS SURROGATE MOTHER TO NEWBORN TIGONS
An African lion in a Chinese zoo gave birth to five tigons - the resultant offspring after mating between a tiger and a lioness - and the zoo found a surrogate Alsatian mother to nurse the five cubs and ensure their survival.
Wuqiao Acrobatics Performance Zoo in Northern China's Hebei province said the African Lion, Di Di, gave birth to the quintuplets on June 15th, 2010.
"From 1am to 4pm, the mother gave birth to five babies; 3 females and two males, weighing from 1100g to 1400g," said the zoo spokesman Yan Wenru.
The five newborn tigons look like a lion at the head, but their bodies have typical tiger stripes.
It is very rare for a male tiger to mate with a female lion and their descendants - such as this litter of five cubs - have a minimal rate of survival.
As the lion Di Di does not have enough milk to feed her babies, the zoo picked Mao Mao, a German Shepherd dog, to act as surrogate mother and nurse the five cubs.
The zoo said the father, Huan Huan, a Siberian tiger from Northeast China, fell in love with Di Di, an African Lion, during the daily show performances.
"They are both 4 years old, a mature age for mating. After performing together for several months, they developed some chemistry," said spokesman Yan.
The zoo said once the cubs are one month old, they'll b...
