How the 'evil twin' of the climate crisis is threatening our oceans. Ocean acidification is rising.
How the 'evil twin' of the climate crisis is threatening our oceans.

In seas around the world pH levels are falling - and scientists are increasingly frustrated that the problem is not being taken seriously enough.

Ocean acidification is rising - and it is doing so at an alarming rate. Ocean acidification, often called the "evil twin" of the climate crisis, is caused when carbon dioxide is rapidly absorbed into the ocean, where it then reacts with water molecules leading to a fall in the pH of the seawater.

Professor Steve Widdicombe, director of science at Plymouth Marine Laboratory. He is a leading expert globally on ocean acidification. Professor Widdicombe is photographed on the deck of the ship used by the team.

The vanishing mangroves of El Salvador: 'All our efforts may only slow the destruction'
In Barra de Santiago, local people are struggling to save one of the few remaining mangrove forests, as they are lost to agriculture and urban sprawl.

Barra de Santiago serves as a crucial carbon sink in a region battling deforestation, and a natural shield for a country exposed to climate crisis-induced tropical storms and escalating sea levels.

Switzerland's KlimaSeniorinnen are taking the government to the European court of human rights for doing too little to tackle the climate crisis.

Switzerland's KlimaSeniorinnen, or senior climate women, are not who most people think of when they talk about those on the frontlines of the climate crisis. The 2,400 members of the group live in one of the richest countries on Earth. Due to their age - the youngest is 64 - they will witness just a fraction of the extreme weather that their generation's children and grandchildren will see.

The older women suing Switzerland to demand climate action. Switzerland's KlimaSeniorinnen.
