A 20-year-old university student is being hailed as the 'new JK Rowling' after signing a six-figure book deal with the Harry Potter author's publisher.
Oxford English undergraduate Samantha Shannon has been offered a three book deal by Bloomsbury.
Her debut novel, called 'Bone Season', is set in 2059 and will follow the adventures of a 19-year-old clairvoyant called Paige, who escapes from life in a criminal underworld.
While Bloomsbury is contracted to publish Bone Season and two sequels, Samantha has already mapped out a seven book series - just like JK Rowling's Harry Potter.
The young author now plans to use the advance from the book deal to pay off her student debts.
Samantha, from Ruislip in northwest London, wrote her first book, 'Aurora', when she was just 15 - spending up to 15 hours a day working on it.
Indeed, she spent so much time in her room her worried mother urged her to get out more.
In 2010 Samantha sent the finished book to 10 agents but it was rejected by them all.
Undeterred, she began writing Bone Season after moving to St Anne's College, Oxford.
She drew inspiration for the novel from the Seven Dials area of Covent Garden - where seven central London streets meet - which fuelled a fascination with the number 7.
Samantha's writing is also influenced by her interest in works such as The Handmaid's Tale and A Clockwork Orange, as well as the poetry of John Donne.
Once complete, Bone Season was snapped up by Bloomsbury's editor-in-chief Alexandra Pringle and it is due to be published next year.

A 20-year-old university student is being hailed as the 'new JK Rowling' after signing a six-figure book deal with the Harry Potter author's publisher.
Oxford English undergraduate Samantha Shannon has been offered a three book deal by Bloomsbury.
Her debut novel, called 'Bone Season', is set in 2059 and will follow the adventures of a 19-year-old clairvoyant called Paige, who escapes from life in a criminal underworld.
While Bloomsbury is contracted to publish Bone Season and two sequels, Samantha has already mapped out a seven book series - just like JK Rowling's Harry Potter.
The young author now plans to use the advance from the book deal to pay off her student debts.
Samantha, from Ruislip in northwest London, wrote her first book, 'Aurora', when she was just 15 - spending up to 15 hours a day working on it.
Indeed, she spent so much time in her room her worried mother urged her to get out more.
In 2010 Samantha sent the finished book to 10 agents but it was rejected by them all.
Undeterred, she began writing Bone Season after moving to St Anne's College, Oxford.
She drew inspiration for the novel from the Seven Dials area of Covent Garden - where seven central London streets meet - which fuelled a fascination with the number 7.
Samantha's writing is also influenced by her interest in works such as The Handmaid's Tale and A Clockwork Orange, as well as the poetry of John Donne.
Once complete, Bone Season was snapped up by Bloomsbury's editor-in-chief Alexandra Pringle and it is due to be published next year.
