A 1968 concert poster advertising shows by legendary guitarist Jimi Hendrix and featuring a winged eyeball has set a world record.
The psychedelic poster, signed by its designer Rick Griffin, and rated at virtually mint condition, went under the hammer for $175,000 USD / €161.000 euros.
That was almost $40,000 USD / €36.800 euros more than any previous psychedelic concert art has fetched at auction.
The original first-printing poster advertised Jimi’s band, The Jimi Hendrix Experience, heading a bill with English blues pioneer John Mayall and his group the Bluesbreakers , plus US blues guitarist Albert King.
It announced performances at San Francisco's famed Fillmore Auditorium and Winterland Ballroom on the first four days of February 1968.
The poster, iconic amongst fans , is also known as BG-105 in a numbered numbered series for shows staged by rock promoter Bill Graham.
The Flying Eyeball poster sold by US saleroom Heritage Auctions was the very first 9.8 out of 10 graded copy to be publicly sold and the highest grade known to exist.
The previous record holder in the specific psychedelic category was a 9.6-graded poster for US band the Grateful Dead that sold for $137,500 lUSD / €126.530 last year.
