NEWS - Hurrikan Matthew: Verwüstungen in Haiti
On 9 October 2016 in the neighbourhood of La Savane in Les Cayes, Haiti, people sift through the ruins and salvage what they can after the passage of Hurricane Matthew that struck on 4 October. Cesar Dickens holds his head while squatting in the ruins of his rented home. ?inienne Jeudi, sits on what was the wall that separated her destroyed home. ?inienne manages to laugh while surrounded by neighborhood children.

Les Cayes is one of the worst affected areas in Grand South with massive flooding in low-lying areas and damage to the town? hospital and other health centres. Families are struggling to find safe water and adequate latrines. Up to 80 per cent of homes in the south of Haiti are reportedly damaged and nearly 16,000 people are staying in temporary shelters. Some 175 schools across Haiti are believed to have sustained heavy damage and at least 150 schools throughout the country are being used to shelter evacuees. A first truck with water-treatment tablets and water bladders arrived to Les Cayes on 6 October with six more water trucks arriving on 8 October into Les Cayes and Jeremie. In addition, a water bladder was made available for the hospital of Les Cayes and more water storage containers are on their way to the affected areas to be used in shelters housing displaced families. UNICEF had pre-positioned water treatment supplies before the hurricane hit.

NEWS - Hurrikan Matthew tötet 1000 Menschen auf Haiti
On 8 October 2016, Renel Ginol, the father of Renelson, 6, and Bethsaina, 8, pose in front of their house, which was destroyed by the path of Hurricane Matthew in the town of Jeremie, in the Garnd-Anse Department, Haiti. For Ginol, the education of his children is what worries him most. 'The school is totally damaged. They will start building the school but it will take several months and my children will loose the whole academic year,' he says. Hurricane Matthew has put the lives of millions of children in Cuba, Haiti, Jamaica and Dominican Republic in danger. In Haiti, it is estimated that half a million children live in the most affected areas by the Hurricane, particularly in Grand-Anse and the South.
