Visions in Porcelain: A Rakes Progress with works by Bouke de Vries

The newly opened installation of eight ceramic vases by Dutch artist Bouke de Vries
This series of cracked, slumped and imploding vases mirror the story in Hogarth’s paintings A Rake’s Progress, housed in the Soane’s Picture Room.

Trained as a restorer, Bouke is known for working with broken historical pieces, expanding them to carefully ‘exploded’ assemblages.

Fans of the Alien horror movie series can toast their favourite space creature – with a special beer stein celebrating the four stages of its life. The hard to kill alien, known as a xenomorph , and designed for the films by the late Swiss artist HR Giger is show as egg, face hugger chest burster and then fully fledged beast. The monster’s tail makes up the handle. The officially licensed stein is made of porcelain with a zinc alloy lid.The wraparound xenomorph design is hand-painted in a custom palette. The biomechanical design touches are said to pay homage to the H.R. Giger original art.The lid is topped with a sculptural chest burster while an Aliens logo glows from the brushed metal base. The 12 inch / 30 cms tall stein can hold almost a litre / 32 fluid ounces.
