Researchers have created microscopic soft robots shaped like flowers that can change shape and behaviour in response to their surroundings, just like living organisms.
And it is hoped they could eventually be used to deliver medicine to helping clean up pollution.
They are made from special crystals formed by combining DNA and inorganic materials.
They can reversibly fold and unfold in seconds, making them among the most dynamic materials ever developed on such a small scale.
Each flower’s DNA acts like a tiny computer program, telling it how to move and react to the world around it.
When the environment changes, such as when acidity rises or falls, the flower can open, close, or trigger a chemical reaction.
That means these DNA-based robots could one day perform tasks on their own, from delivering medicine to cleaning up pollution.
The robot was developed at the University of North Carolina in the USA.

Scientists have used new methods for extracting DNA to look at the ingredients of an Ancient Roman fermented fish-based sauce called garum.

They sifted remains at a salting plant in Spain and found that European sardines were the key ingredient.

Fish was an important part of the ancient Roman diet, and Romans processed their catch for long-term preservation in coastal fish-salting plants called cetariae.

There, they crushed and fermented small fish into pastes and sauces such as garum.

Analysing the fish used in Roman condiments could provide insight into the diets and culture of ancient people as well as information on fish populations of the time.

The intense processing that took place at the salting plants has previously made it almost impossible to visually identify species from their remains.

To overcome this limitation, an international team of researchers tested using DNA analysis.

Despite the fact that grinding and fermentation accelerate genetic degradation, they were able to sequence DNA from fish remains found in a fish-salting vat at a cetaria in Adro Vello, northwest Spain.

Black Sabbath rock star Ozzy Osbourne is letting fans get hold of his DNA.
He has teamed up with US beverage maker Liquid Death for a limited-edition run of ten cans of low-cal of iced tea.
The 76-year-old Paranoid singer sipped from each of the tins , leaving his saliva on them.
The cans, with his DNA in the saliva, were then crushed, signed by the star, then put on sale in a see-through capsule for $450 USD / €390 euros each.
The company says the Infinitely Recyclable Ozzy cans were sealed in lab-grade display cases and sold out almost instantly.
Each holds a trace of Ozzy’s saliva, preserved for posterity—or cloning.
Liquid Death teased fans might recreate their own Ozzy “once technology and federal law permit.”
In 2024, the British born vocalist fronted a campaign for tLiquid Death’s powdered electrolyte mix, Death Dust.
On July 5, Ozzy is set to reunite with the all original Black Sabbath lineup in their UK home town of Birmingham for a farewell concert called Back to the Beginning.
Despite health issues including a Parkinson’s diagnosis and multiple surgeries he told fans: “This is my full stop.”
A Liquid Death spokesperson said :”Ozzy Osbourne is 1 of 1.
“Yes, we really got him to drink from cans of our low-calorie Iced Tea.
“In the process, he left behind DNA from his saliva that you can now own.”

A company which brought back extant dire wolves into the world using DNA has given an update on the three cubs that were born.
Two males, named Romulus and Remus are just over six months old and weigh in at over 40 kilos which is already 20% larger than a moderngrey wolf at the same development stage.
They’re heading to their first vet visit for blood tests and CT scans to monitor skeletal development and overall health.
They’re also moved on in their evolving diet, being fed daily on high-quality kibble, bones, chunk meat, organ meat, and soon full carcasses to mimic natural wild feeding.
US company Colossal Biosciences based in Texas, calls its method of bringing back the dire wolves, de-extinction.
The predators , made famous from the HBO hit series Game of Thrones, had previously been extinct for over 12,500 years at the end of the last ice age.
A team took DNA from a 13,000 year old dire wolf tooth and a 72,000 year old skull to make the healthy dire wolf puppies which were born to surrogates.
A spokesperson said Remus , although the slightly smaller of the two brothers, is stepping into the alpha role with “quiet observation and strategic thinking.”

Dr. Paul Hebert developed DNA barcoding in his back yard using a UV light and a white sheet to collect the moths of his childhood. He believes it could help discover all life on the planet.

Dr. Paul Hebert the founder of the Centre for Biodiversity and Genomics at the University of Guelph photographed in his backyard in Puslinch, Ontario, Canada on February 21, 2024. The evolutionary biologist collects moth samples globally and as local as his own backyard, using DNA to index and barcode the specimens.

ZAKA recovery operation in Kfar Aza kibbutz
    EXCLUSIVE:
November 13, 2023 - Kfar Aza, Israel: Dozens of ZAKA volunteers are collecting remains of murdered kibbutz residents, including hair, blood and pieces of flesh from all the attacked houses of civilians who were murdered by Hamas terrorists on the massacre of October 7th, to bring all parts to proper burial. ZAKA,?'Disaster Victim Identification' is a series of voluntary community emergency response teams in Israel, each operating in a police district (two in the Central District due to geographic considerations). These organizations are recognized by the Israeli government. The full name is "ZAKA – Identification, Extraction and Rescue – True Kindness". The two largest ZAKA factions are Zaka Tel Aviv and ZAKA Search and Rescue. Members of ZAKA, most of whom are Orthodox Jews, assist ambulance crews, aid in the identification of the victims of terrorism, road accidents and other disasters, and where necessary gather body parts and spilled blood for proper Jewish burial. They also provide first aid and rescue services, and help with the search for missing persons and participate in international rescue and recovery operations.
