'We've got our club back': Southend fans celebrate win and takeover deal
Victory over Oxford City came after a sale, led by Australian investor Justin Rees, had been agreed at the last minute.

This match, a National League fixture against Oxford City, had been expected to be a wake. A winding up order was to be heard in the high court on Wednesday, the final, inexorable verdict on the 25-year ownership of Ron Martin, a property developer who took Southend to the Championship and promised an even brighter future, only for everything to come crashing down over the past half a dozen years, league position included.

At 5pm on Tuesday, however, news came through that the wake could become a party. A deal to sell Southend had been agreed at the last minute, with Martin transferring ownership to a consortium led by the Australian investor Justin Rees.

Southend supporters celebrate the second goal by their team. Southend United have agreed to be taken over by a consortium headed by the Australian Businessman Justin Rees. The deal was announced 24 hours before Southend were due in court facing closure due tto debts. Southend United played Oxfoird City on Tuesday night in what was potentially their last game. Southend won 2-0.

Former England footballer Paul Gascoigne has been sectioned under the Mental Health Act after an incident in a hotel in Gateshead on Wednesday (20th February) night. The midfielder was detained after Northumbria Police were called to the Hilton Hotel after "receiving a report of concern for a 40-year-old man staying at the hotel". A police spokesperson added that no one had been injured during the incident. The altercation happened shortly after Gascoigne was involved in another incident at a different hotel on the same night. According to a spokeseperson for the Malmaison Hotel Gascoigne left the hotel after becoming agressive towards a night porter when a fire alarm went off, allegedly grabbing him around the neck while holding a steak knife. The Gascoigne family insist that Gascoigne voluntarily handed himself in to police as a "cry for help".Gascoigne has a long history of drink problems and has received treatment for stress, depression and a drink problem in the past.
