NEWS - Klima Aktivisten halten die deutsche Polizei auf Trab
October 9, 2019, Berlin, Germany: For three days now, the activists of Extinction Rebellion have been blocking streets in Berlin. Hundreds follow the call for occupation of the Berlin Victory Column, The Potsdamer Platz, as well as bridges located in the city center. The actions restrict far fewer Berliners as expected by the movement. One thing is remarkable about these protests, the peaceful manners between police and demonstrators - evidently a well thought strategy by the XR de-escalation team. The movement demands ''the immediate declaration of climatic emergency,'' ''Drastic measures to combat climate change,'' and ''Genuine democracy tools to help citizens monitor climate change. Ali lies in the basement of his family's house in Galzani. Although it has been completely destroyed by the bombs 23 people live in the room. Ali's father says: "We will rebuild our homes again. The most important thing is that we have been liberated from ISIS"
Life in Mosul, Iraq - Mar 2017
*Full story: https://www.rexfeatures.com/nanolink/t87b
The Iraqi army announced the liberation of the entire East-Mosul on Jan. 18, three months after the beginning of the offensive. Iraq's armed forces launched the offensive to retake Mosul in October and are still fighting to retake western Mosul, on the other bank of the Tigris River. The fighting has seen thousands of Iraqs flee, with the country?s immigration minister Jassim Mohammed recently reporting that some 355,000 people have been displaced. Many end up at already overcrowded refugee camps such as Al-Alil to the south of Mosul. Others head to the shattered eastern side of the city. Here, while ISIS, who took over the city in June 2014, may have been driven out the scars and damage left in their wake is still painfully visible. As residents slowly return to their homes they face a large hard battle just to survive let alone rebuild and return to a semblance of normal life.

Hout Bay / Imizamo Yethu. Hout Bay is a picturesque valley about 15km south of Cape Town. Nestled between two affluent housing estates is the suburb of Imizamo Yethu, comprised of both a designated housing area and an ?informal settlement? area, which is largely comprised of small tin-roof shack dwellings which stretch up the steep slopes of the mountain behind it. The most striking thing is the number of trees in Tierboskloof (the richer estate), versus the almost treeless Imizamo Yethu

A photographer has captured a stark view of the urban economic segregation in South Africa.
Johnny Miller has used drone technology to take an aerial view of the divide in standards of living between the poor and the wealthy.
His work highlights how the manicured suburbs of the middle classes sit only several hundred metres away from the ramshackle shanty towns of the poorest members of society.
An example include a God's-eye view of the picturesque suburbs looking out onto the glistening waters of Lake Michelle, 20km from Cape Town?s city centre. Separated by wetlands, a guard house and an electrified fence, the 38,000 inhabitants of the neighbouring tin shacks of Masiphumelele are a world away.

FULL WORDS: http://www.rexfeatures.com/nanolink/si1b
A Japanese village has been replacing humans with life-sized dolls after death.
The doll population in Nagoro, Shikoku Island, now hugely outnumbers people in this isolated mountain village. A 67-year-old woman, Tsukimi Ayano, has spent years weaving more than 350 of these dolls to remember her once-flourishing community.
The lifeless figures now dwarf the 30 or so residents left in the village.

KAZAKHSTAN / Zhangiz-Tobe / 2008. Abandoned Soviet military base after the collapse of the USSR. Inside the Palace of Culture on the military base. The painting is a reproduction of the original by P. Krivonogov "Capitulation", 1946. Zhangiz-Tobe housed R-36 / SS-18 'Satan' intercontinental ballistic missiles, one of the most powerful of Soviet weapons. The end of World War II saw the USSR emerge as one of the world's two superpowers. Celebration of victory over Nazi Germany replaced the cult of Revolution and gave a legitimacy to the regime. The painful realities of the war often found expression in allegorical semi-religious images of mothers holding dead children in their arms. Honouring the immense sacrifices of the war was at least one thing which the government and the people could agree about.

These haunting photographs show the remnants of the once all-powerful Soviet empire.
They are the work of Eric Lusito, who spent six years travelling throughout the former Soviet world from East Germany to Mongolia, from Poland to Kazakhstan to seek out remains of the military installations that embodied the ambition and the might of the USSR.
Describing himself as working like an archaeologist, the French photographer says his project "Traces of the Soviet Empire" is a photographic record of the land and architecture - haunted by the symbols and history of a once powerful Empire.
The on-going project takes the form of three series: exteriors, interiors, and found photographs "images from another time, another space and another world".
What he found was colourfu

The Chinook Helicopter has a charming mechanism. The back door drops down, a tank and a soldier emerge, fire a few rounds then go back inside and the ramp closes behind them. All the while the whole thing is circling the floor while the rotors spin, there's loads of engine noise and gunfire and the lights flash. You have to admire the guy who put that much care and character into a two dollar toy.
Photographer Captures Intriguing X-rays of Toys
Australian photographer Brendan Fitzpatrick has spent 20 years documenting the skylines of cities around the world.
His latest series called Invisible Light looks at how x-ray technology can be used to reveal the surprisingly beautiful internal structures of simple objects like tulips, crabs, and toy replicas of robots and helicopters.
The project uses chest X-rays and mammogram machines to explore the inner workings of various objects and natural forms.
The 45-year-old has scanned toy robots, a toy gun, flowers and even a hen's eggs revealing their complex interiors.
The Sydney based photographer explains that he was inspired to look at X-rays while researching for a commercial job.
"The art directors wanted an X-ray effect which I assumed would be created using negatives etc. I never thought it worked so I explored the possibility of using real X-rays. I was very lucky to find a radiologist willing to work with me."
The photographer explains that the project is ongoing, and that he hopes to bring more depth and complexity to his interpretation of the subjects in the future.
Brendan believes the X-ray toys and models would make great wall art. He says that...

There was even a proposal of marriage on the 'love balcony'. This Picture was displayed for the Visit Britain's 'Great' Campaign - September 6, 2011
Streets Ahead: Amazing 3D Pavement Art
Streets Ahead: Amazing 3D Pavement Art
From Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles escaping from the sewer at London's Southbank to a Royal Wedding in Sweden this stunning 3D street art is probably the best on the planet.
Thanks to skilled British artists Joe Hill and Max Lowry pedestrians have had a whole host of dangers to negotiate as they go about their business.
For the past eight years the talented twosome have brought their 3D art skills to pavements all around the globe - with jaw-dropping results - raging waterfalls, a record-breaking crevasse and the legendary Loch Ness monster.
Since Max tragically passed away in 2010, Joe decided to continue their work, keeping the name 3D Joe and Max in Max's memory.
His latest work includes a giant beanstalk bursting through the pavement to celebrate the release of Jack The Giant Slayer, which opens in cinemas today (March 22), extending The Solaris Building in Singapore by four levels and building a futuristic city for Motorola in London and Barcelona.
Not only do these incredible chalk drawings look realistic by themselves - but when passers-by jump into the scene they take on a life of their own.
Press Officer for 3D Joe and Max, Lucy Pratt said: "We usually use chalk to 'map out' the picture and then use paint after, the illusion is created through a camera lens.
"Sometimes an intricately detailed large-scale drawing can take up to seven days to complete, sometimes longer depending on the weath...

12LVE Destroyed Apple products project, San Francisco, America - Dec 2010

The Man Who Shot, Burned and Ran A Train Over His Apple Products
If an iPod is on your Christmas list look away now - an artist has shot, burned, hammered and sawed his way through a range of Apple products.
Heartless Michael Tompert even ran over a selection of iPods with a TRAIN.
San Francisco-based Michael spent months purchasing the doomed products, which range from 2008's colourful range of iPods to the sought-after 2010 iPad
He hooked up with photographer friend Paul Fairchild to capture the end results of various kill methods.
Methods of destruction varied by product. A MacBook Air was decorated with nine neat bulletholes courtesy of a 9mm Heckler & Koch handgun, while a Magic Mouse was sliced up with a handsaw.
And Michael even took the drastic action of placing seven iPod Nanos on the tracks in the path of a Caltrain Diesel Locomotive.
But it was the iPad that proved the hardest to kill. Described by Michael as "practically indestructible", it shrugged off blows from an 8lb sledgehammer before finally meeting it's maker (Steve Jobs?) after its insides were heated with a soldering torch until it exploded.
Michael got the idea for the project after he bought his two sons an iPod Touch each for Christmas. The boys started to fight over one of the mp3 players which had a certain game installed.
His patience finally snapping, Michael grabbed one of the iPods and smashed it on the ground, to the amazement of his children.
"I had given my kids an iPod Touch so they would be happy and love me. But when the argument started I just grabbed it and smashed it in front of them because it was just a thing.

Check out the heavy metal on these celebs.
With such beefy bangles weighing them down these fashion forward stars have no need for the gym.
Instead their cumbersome cuffs and ample arm bands are more than enough to build some serious muscle.
Dripping with bling and laden down with sparkle these bulky bracelets pack a hefty fashion punch.
Which goes to show that a beefy bangle is one way to make an off the cuff style statement.
If the fashion police were to investigate these stylish stars would all escape without even a slap on the wrist.

What were they thinking? Fashion Disasters
It would seem that even the most fashion conscious of celebs can have an off day.
The stylists of these dreadfully dressed divas were obviously not around when they stepped out of the front door.
If they had they surely would have uttered that immortal line: "You're not going out like that!"
When left unattended there's no end of fashion faux pas a star can commit when looking for a 'stand out from the crowd' outfit.
But then looking fabulous 24/7 is something not even the most dedicated of A-listers can achieve.
And navigating the tricky minefield of fashion can be tricky at the best of times and pure style suicide at the worst.
Your 'unusual' outfit can just as easily be feted on every best dressed list as see you plunging to the bottom of the reject pile.
All of which goes to show that not even the hottest stars are immune to the odd fashion disaster.

Buildings Made from Toothpicks by Stan Munro - 11 Sep 2009
THE TOOTHPICK LANDMARKS
A former television presenter has spent six years building famous landmarks - out of six million toothpicks.
Stan Munro used more than 170 litres of glue as he worked full time on buildings such as Big Ben, Tower Bridge and The Vatican.
He has also recreated Sydney's Opera House, the Taj Mahal and Cutty Sark in 1:164 scale.
The married 38-year-old can take anything from one day to six months to make each building.
The majority of his time goes into research.
He downloads as many technical drawings and satellite images as possible from the internet and scales the rest himself.
Stan's buildings are largely hollow, with just a few structural supports - also made from the toothpicks he buys direct from a wholesaler.
The larger models are made in separate pieces so they can be moved with less hassle.
Stan continues to work on his models at the Museum of Science and Technology in Syracuse, New York, United States.
His latest exhibition, called Toothpick City II - Temples and Towers, features more than 40 famous religious and tall buildings from around the world.
He has been working on it for four years and it is due to be completed in December.
He has built structures out of toothpicks since his school days when he was asked to build a 6-inch tall structure that could hold an egg.
His was so strong it could hold his desk.
He combined his childhood passion of toothpicks with his more adult interest in
architecture in 2003, following three months of unemployment.
His first Toothpick City, called History of Skyscrapers, was sold to a museum in Mallorca, Spain. It took two years to build and has 50 buildings.
Stan said: "Toothpick City was so much fun to build that I dec...

Wood cargo from the Russian ship Sinegorsk washes ashore near Ramsgate, Kent, Britain - 22 Jan 2009
TIMBER WASHES ASHORE IN KENT
Hundreds of tonnes of timber that fell from a cargo ship in the English Channel has prompted scavenging fears after washing ashore on the Kent coast.
According to the Dover coastguard the shoreline around Ramsgate and Margate is piled high with wood that fell from the Russian-registered Sinegorsk earlier this week.
The vessel shed its 1,500-tonne load of 6ft-long (1.8m) planks of untreated pine when it was struck by rough seas on Monday (19 January).
A spokesman for Dover coastguard expressed concern over anyone trying to salvage the wood.
"If they wade in to recover it they are putting themselves in real danger as the sea is so rough," he said.
Kent Police have also warned people not to remove any timber from the shoreline.
Ch Supt John Molloy said: "I would like to remind people that the shoreline can be a dangerous place, particularly with the current poor weather and people could be putting themselves at unnecessary risk by venturing into the sea to salvage the timber.
"This cargo remains the property of the original owner and to steal it is not only foolhardy, but also a criminal offence."

Daffy the duck and Jock the West Highland Terrier who are best friends at the Green Dragon pub, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, Britain - 09 Oct 2006
UK PAPERS OUT
Mandatory Credit: Photo by Matthew Power / Rex Features (614164j)
A dog and a duck have struck up an unlikely friendship - behind the bar of a pub called the Green Dragon. The unlikely story began when landlord Grant Adlam saved several eggs from a duck's nest which had been attacked by crows. The mother had abandoned the nest so Mr Adlam incubated the eggs in his airing cupboard, turning them every day. 'Two weeks after I saved the eggs, I heard a squeaking noise coming from the cupboard, and when I opened it Daffy was sitting on the floor' he said. Mr Adlam, landlord of the Green Dragon pub in Cambridge asked for advice from the Wildlife Society, which advised him on how to care for Daffy. Daffy, now eight weeks old, has been a huge hit with visitors to the pub as well as Mr Adlam's pet dog, west highland terrier Jock. Jock, who Mr Adlam describes as incredibly friendly and loving, has become very protective of the young bird. Mr Adlam said: 'They get on like a house on fire. Jock is there waiting for her first thing every morning when I go to let her out'. And it seems Jock's feelings are reciprocated - Jock and Daffy in the beer garden of the pub

Farmer Carol McGuire has drafted in llamas as unlikely security guards to protect her sheep from foxes. After sheepdogs proved useless she desperately needed some other method to keep her flock safe, and since investing in the exotic animals, who fend off predators by spitting, she hasn't lost any sheep. Carol said: 'Getting in llamas was the best thing I've ever done. The sheepdogs kept getting injured and they didn't bond with my sheep at all. But the llamas work because they think of the sheep as one of their own herd. They take extra special care of them'
