Great Central Railway closed the line in 1969. More than 50 years later, work is under way to reunify two parts of the last Victorian mainline railway to be built, split by the Beeching cuts of the 1960s.
Planning permission is being sought and funds are being raised to draw up engineering plans to reconnect the Loughborough to Leicester line with another section running north to Nottingham.

'Heritage is the razzmatazz': Great Central Railway plans to revive Victorian train route
More than half a century after it was split by the 'Beeching axe', funds are being raised to reconnect Loughborough to Leicester line with Nottingham.
Great Central Railway closed the line in 1969. More than 50 years later, work is under way to reunify two parts of the last Victorian mainline railway to be built, split by the Beeching cuts of the 1960s.
Planning permission is being sought and funds are being raised to draw up engineering plans to reconnect the Loughborough to Leicester line with another section running north to Nottingham.

The heritage railway has been run by volunteers since 1969 after its closure by British Railways and is now a visitor attraction.

Full steam ahead on the Snowdon Mountain Railway - in pictures
Guardian photographer Christopher Thomond bought a ticket for the first coal-fired steam service of the year on the peak known in Welsh as Yr Wyddfa.
Engine No5 Moel Síabod between Clogwyn Station (at 779metres) and the summit as engines run the first coal-fired steam services of the year on the Snowdon Mountain Railway, a 4.7mile rack and pinion railway from Llanberis to the summit of Yr Wyddfa, the highest mountain in Wales.
