Galapagos animal paradise
August 6, 2024 - Galapagos Islands, Ecuador: A young frigate bird on Genovesa Island. The Galapagos archipelago is known for its rich animal life: wide variety of finches, swimming marine iguanas, flightless cormorant, fur seals living side by side with tropical animals, and many more species. The government of Ecuador designated part of the Galapagos a wildlife sanctuary in 1935, and in 1959 the sanctuary became the Galapagos National Park. In 1978 the islands were designated a UNESCO World Heritage site, and in 1986 the Galapagos Marine Resources Reserve was created to protect the surrounding waters. The crew of HMS Montrose are seen here carrying out a man overboard exercise (MOBEX), using a rigid hull inflatable boat.
On Sunday 19th January 2020 HMS MONTROSE (stbd) conducted a man overboard exercise (MOBEX) after sailing from Bahrain.
A MOBEX is always required within 24 hours of a ship sailing from harbour. In the event that a man falls over the side of the ship into the water, an alert will be made and whole ships reactions will be required. A MOBEX is not only carried out after sailing from harbour, they are part of regular training and part of life on board a warship.
HMS MONTROSE is currently carrying out duties patrolling the Gulf, keeping the shipping lanes safe and ensuring that international trade is not threatened. In the first two months on patrol in 2019 HMS MONTROSE safeguarded over 6 million tonnes of British Shipping. HMS MONTROSE is also carrying out counter narcotic operations for CTF 150.
HMS MONTROSE is a type 23 frigate originally based in Plymouth and is the Royal Navy’s forward operating ship based out in the Gulf for the upcoming years and works on a watch rotation basis.

REPORTAGE - Kaliningrad: Eine Stadt in Russland
April 06, 2017 - Baltiisk, Kaliningrad, Russia: Russian navy ships in the harbor of Baltiisk, the main Russian Navy Baltic base and seaport. The Kaliningrad governor is preparing legislation to create an electronic visa to facilitate travel to neighboring Poland and ease tensions between Russia and Europe. The federal center has not determined if the region is a fortress or a bridge and it could be the Baltic Strasbourg, a symbol of reconciliation. With a population of about 1 millionhe, the oblast's administrative center is Kaliningrad, formerly known as Königsberg. The territory was formerly part of East Prussia. With the defeat of Nazi Germany in 1945, it was informally annexed by the Soviet Union. Germany currently places no claims, however it also has not renounced any claims to the possibility of territory reunification. Following the expulsion of the German-speaking population, it was populated with citizens from the Soviet Union. Only a few thousand ethnic Germans remain, most of them recent immigrants from the former Soviet Union. Early in the 21st century, the flagging economy of Kaliningrad became one of the best performing economies in Russia. This was helped by a low manufacturing tax rate related to its "Special Economic Zone" status. As of 2006, one in three televisions manufactured in Russia came from Kaliningrad. Some 2,100 employees of the Avtotor factory assemble vehicles from the BMW, Kia and Hyundiai brands for the Russian market. Another advantage is that the region has 90% of the world's amber reserves and the world's largest fossil resin mining mine.
