A bandage-like wearable device that offers realistic sensations with touch screens and in virtual and augmented reality worlds.
The team behind it says the invention gives the same clarity, detail and speed that skin naturally detects, accurately matches the sensing abilities of the human fingertip.
The device, called VoxeLite, gently wraps around a fingertip to give realism to digital touch.
It could someday sync with devices to transform flat, smooth screens into textured interfaces.
That potentially could lead to more lifelike online shopping experiences, where shoppers can feel textiles and fabrics before making a purchase.
It could also lead to tactile maps for people with vision impairments or more interactive games, where players can feel the stretch of a rubber band or the bumpy rocks on a cliff.
Researchers at the USA’s Northwestern University said haptic feedback , currently used for digital touch sensations, cannot convey the rich, detailed information the fingertips naturally perceive.
This is partially because the skin’s spatial and temporal resolution is notoriously difficult to simulate.
One of the team, Sylvia Tan, who led the study, said: “Touch is the last major sense without a true digital interface.
“We have technologies that make things look and sound real. Now, we want to make textures and tactile sensations feel real. "

OPS: Sylvia Tan shows various VoxeLite prototypes. Tan and her team tested different densities of nodes to arrive at 'human resolution.'

Blind people are being given the chance to enjoy classic paintings – by having them turned into 3D versions they can touch. They are able to feel every bump and dress fold on the Mona Lisa as well as run their fingers around her enigmatic smile.A special method called Tactile Fine Art Printing converts any 2-dimensional image to a 3-dimensional, tactile fine art print. The prints have length, width, depth and texture. Sensors are embedded throughout the prints that when touched, activate audio to blind people also get an audio description of what they are experiencing.Prints are available in sizes up to 1.5 metres by 3 metres. The company behind it, 3D Photoworks, wants to get as many of these artworks as it can into museums and galleries around the world. As well as Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa, other masterpieces which have been converted include Vincent van Gogh’s Dr Gachet and George Washington Crossing the Delaware by Emanuel Leutze.
