A giant man-made oasis is to be created in UAE city Dubai to attract campers and nature lovers.

The one million square metre Al Layan Oasis development will feature a lake covering more than a quarter of a million square metres.

The project aims to showcase the beauty of the desert environment while promoting sustainability and quality of life for residents and visitors.

It forms part of a package of initiatives recently launched by Dubai Municipality as part of a broader vision to create an urban environment.

It is balances sustainability, liveability, and quality of life, supported by projects valued at more than AED4 billion / €228.8 million euros.

The project includes 14 km of walking and cycling tracks, including 4 km of elevated paths rising five metres above ground level, offering panoramic views of the oasis and linking with existing routes in Al Marmoom.

The oasis will serve as a key stop along Dubai’s caravan route a located around 50 minutes from the city centre, enabling visitors to experience the desert in a calm and tranquil setting.

The project is planning to attract 330,000 visitors annually, balancing eco-tourism development with the preservation of natural systems.

Plans also include expanding native planting and shaded areas to enhance visitor comfort and support environmental sustainability.

Zookeepers at London Zoo are readying their clipboards, calculators and steady counting skills, as they prepare to count the animals at the Zoo’s annual stocktake.

Caring for more than 10,000 individual animals, London Zoo’s keepers face the challenging task of tallying up every mammal, bird, reptile and invertebrate at the Zoo – counting everything from a colony of inquisitive Humboldt penguins to Critically Endangered Asiatic lions.

A requirement of London Zoo’s zoological license, the annual stocktake takes keepers almost a week to fully complete and the information is shared with other zoos around the world via a database called ZIMS Species360, where it’s used to help manage the worldwide conservation breeding programmes for endangered animals.
