The tomb of Cardinal Richelieu in the Sorbonne chapel. The powerful Richelieu (1585-1642) was chief minister to King Louis XIII of France, and in 1622, was elected principal of the Sorbonne. During his tenure, he presided over the renovation of college buildings, including the construction of the chapel. During the French Revolution, Richelieu's body was exhumed and some of his body parts are said to have been scattered. PARIS: Sorbonne celebrates its 750th anniversary
The magnificent ceiling in the Sorbonne Peristyle. The stained glass represents the city of Paris with the boat denoting the River Seine. The Peristyle is the reception area in the Palais Academique, the building which houses the offices of the Rector of the University of Paris, and where important conferences are held. The world-renowned university situated on Paris' Left Bank celebrates its 750th anniversary this year. Originally set up as a small school of theology for 20 students in 1257, its historic domed-crowned site off the Boulevard Saint Michel is nowadays a Paris landmark. Paris, FRANCE - 2007. PARIS: Sorbonne celebrates its 750th anniversary
The magnificent Sorbonne Peristyle, the reception area in the Palais Academique, the building which houses the offices of the Rector of the University of Paris, and where important conferences are held. The ornate wrought iron door leads to the university's Grand Amphitheatre. To the left of the door is the Stairway of Sciences and to the right, the Stairway of Humanities, both leading up to the Rector's Grand Salon on the first floor.
