London Dungeon brings in tarantulas for Halloween, London, Britain - 24 Oct 2012
Leading UK attraction, the London Dungeon, called in some special helpers yesterday (23rd October) to assist in preparations for Halloween - a team of gigantic, venomous South American Tarantula Spiders. The four strong team comprising a Mexican Red Knee, Pink Toe Tarantula, Brazilian Bird Eater and Chilean Rose Spider was brought in to up the cobweb count as the venue gears up for its biggest time of the year. Seen here a venomous Mexican Red Knee Tarantula weaves its threads amongst a pile of pumpkins as the attraction gets ready for its busiest time of the year. The creatures are more usually found in the Rain Forests of South America where they are normally found devouring crickets and mice; a Brazilian Bird Eater liquidizes the internal organs of its prey before sucking them out! Their webs will add to the scare factor as the London Dungeon celebrates Halloween with trick or treat mayhem starring the mischievous Trickster character until 4th November.

Meerkat triplets make their debut, Dudley Zoo, Dudley, Britain - 28 Aug 2012
Mums's the word for this tiny twosome after a child's dummy dropped into the meerkat enclosure at Dudley Zoo was quickly picked up by their mother and brought over to the young pups.

Three tiny new arrivals have been spotted out and about exploring their surroundings, after opening their eyes for the first time this week.

The triplets were born in one of the underground burrows around three weeks ago and made their public debut in recent days to join the eight-strong mob of adults.

A meerkat is born undeveloped unable to open its eyes or ears for around two weeks and youngsters stay close to the burrows, usually with an adult meerkat who has been chosen as the babysitter of the pack.

Keepers will have to wait until the babies are eight weeks old until they are able to find out what sex they are.

Ungulates team leader, Jay Haywood, said: "The babies are very cute and are always a hit with visitors with their antics."

Timm Schneider the creator of the humourous art that brings ordinary objects to life when a pair of comic eyes is placed on them.
Artist Claps Eyes on Potential Comic Creatures
Pedestrians may be forgiven in thinking they are being watched with Timm Schneider's street art.

The German photographer gives often-surprising personalities to ordinary objects simply by giving them a comedy pair of eyes.

Take a walk down certain streets in Germany and find the pavements turned into a playground of colourful creatures.

Passer-bys have done a double take while passing watchful bins and beady-eyed bollards.

Photo highlights include a dog deciding twice to use its beloved lamp-post after being stared at intently.

The 28-year-old freelance graphic designer said: "Most people are thrilled when they see my artwork on the street, I think because of the simplicity and the humorous nature."

However, Mr Schnieder says that people quite often run off with the Kermit-like eyes.

He also said: "I don't feel like the typical artist selling artworks in galleries.

"I am just having fun and define my own border of what is art measured on the reaction of the public."

    Beautiful Bird Behaviour
A photographer has spent years capturing the incredible lengths mother birds go to when feeding their hungry chicks.

Just like for humans, parenthood appears to keep these mother birds on their toes.

Some of the astonishing pictures show days-old chicks precariously balanced while their long-suffering mother hovers above with a tasty treat.

The parents display incredible skill when it comes to dinner time, feeding their offspring in mid air or gingerly edging along tiny twigs to get to their brood.

The heart-warming pictures were taken by amateur photographer Octavianus Darmawan near his car service station in Jakarta, Indonesia.

The 56-year-old can spend anything from a few days to weeks capturing the perfect shot of mother and her chicks together.

He said: "I take pictures to showcase the beauty of nature around me.

"I'm always impressed when I see the mother birds feeding their chicks because I can see how difficult it can be to find food and raise their kids.

"They have to face dangers like snakes and cats and it can be a struggle but they work hard.

"I became appreciative of my own parents after watching these birds and it made me thankful for the struggle they'd gone through to teach me and raise me well."

THE DISUSED ELEVATED RAIL TRACK SET TO BECOME NEW YORK'S PRETTIEST PARK

The High Line in west Chelsea is being converted into a park including floating ponds, sundecks and lookout spots over the Hudson River and Manhattan.

The elevated former industrial line had become decrepit and overgrown but thanks to the support of wealthy benefactors and several famous names it is undergoing a transformation into an amazing green space.

With the first phase set to open to the public later this month (June), the park should span 22 blocks once it's all open in 2010.

Stretching 1.45 miles, up to 30ft high and only 60ft wide, the line runs along Manhattan's West Side, from Gansevoort Street, in the Meatpacking District, through Chelsea to 34th Street.

Having last carried freight in 1980, it was saved from demolition by former mayor Michael Bloomberg and has seen high-profile support from the likes of Donna Karan, Ralph Lauren, Susan Sarandon, Harvey Weinstein and Jerry Seinfeld.

With $50m needed to complete the project, a recent star-studded fundraising gala saw individuals donations of $10m each from media mogul Barry Diller, whose corporate headquarters overlooks the elevated tracks, and billionaire hedge-fund manager Philip Falcone and his wife Lisa Maria, bringing the total current project pot to ...
