Night Heron Snatches Duckling For Dinner
These shocking images show nature at its worst.

A night heron is pictured taking off with a duckling that has swum too far away from its mother.

As the heron flies off with his dinner, eye contact is made between the mother duck and her duckling who is struggling to get away.

Wildlife photographer Michael Yang was taking his wife out to spot some cute wildlife at Radio Road in California to cheer her up after being ill for a few days.

He said: "We were hoping to find some baby avocets, stilts, or ducklings and were both really happy to see several families of ducklings following their mothers around the pond.

"As we were watching the ducklings a night heron flew in, which are not uncommon in the area but what we did not expect to see was the night heron land near a duckling that had wandered a little too far from its mother and snatch it from the water."

The duckling tried to dive under water to escape the night heron; unfortunately it didn't get deep enough and the heron pulled it out of the water, grabbing the duckling by a foot.

It took off with its dinner all the while the duckling was being flung about like a rag doll in the heron's beak.

Michael said: "At some point in all this my wife had turned away and started sobbing. It didn't help that, through all this, I was taking pictures of the "event" and not comforting her instead."

Seven, three-day-old ducklings lined up on a log
Three-day-old-ducklings at Pennywell Farm, Devon, Britain - 25 Apr 2011
When it comes to family photos there's always one who has to misbehave. They may only be three days old but it's already clear who out of this brood of seven ducklings is going to cause the most trouble. When the fluffy youngsters were all lined up for a family portrait at Pennywell Farm in Devon one of them just simply refused to co-operate. While his cute siblings happily faced the camera the rebellious youngster turned his back. To make matters worse he then managed to fall from his perch, almost causing the whole brood to take a tumble. According to farmer Chris Murray, 60, this was the ducklings' first outing after being hatched. He comments: "It was so funny as they were all facing the same way staring at the camera out of curiosity, apart from one who sat with his back to it, before deciding to stand up and make all the others tumble off like dominos".

World's Rarest Birds Captured On Camera
These remarkable pictures reveal some of the world's rarest birds - which have only ever been photographed by a handful of people.

The unique shots were captured by patient photographers who travelled to some of the remotest places on the planet and spent weeks behind the lens.

They are all winning entries in an international competition to secure images of the 566 most threatened birds on Earth.

They are to be featured in a new book, The World's Rarest Birds, which aims to highlight the plight of these endangered birds.

"These are all incredibly rare birds and capturing them on camera shows a huge commitment by each photographer," said Andy Swash, a member of the World's Rarest Project team.

"You can't just go out into your back garden and get these shots. These birds live in really remote locations.

"Once you have got there you often have to spend hours waiting to see these and getting any image, let alone the one you want, could take weeks or months."

One of the most spectacular images shows a Kakapo, a flightless parrot from New Zealand, taken by photographer Shane McInnes.

There are just 124 of these birds remaining in the wild, but amazingly this picture was snapped on a compact camera just a metre or so away from the parrot.

"Very few people have been fortunate to get that close to a Kakapo. But they are not used to predators and are not worried by humans so Shane has ended up was able to take this fantastic shot," added Andy.

Another image shows a Brazilian Merganser with its eight young ducklings, which can only be found on fast-flowing rivers in central Brazil and north-eastern Argentina.

The population is less than 250 and decreasing due to pollution and changes in water flow.

RUB A DUB DUB THE DUCKS WITHOUT A TUB

Rub a dub dub these tiny ducklings could do with their own tub.

But for the time being the fluffy youngsters must be content gaining their water wings in a sink instead.

At least it's better than facing the freezing conditions outside on the pond, where the tiny new arrivals would surely have perished.

The born out of season youngsters found themselves in trouble after being born a whopping six months early.

Home is now the Secret World Animal Rescue Centre in Somerset where the ducklings have been introduced to the water for the first time.

Crowded together in the sink in the sanctuary's bathroom the gaggle seemed unconcerned by their lucky escape.

If they hadn't been discovered and had stayed out in the cold they wouldn't have been able to survive the cold nights.

Judging by their happy paddling it won't be long before the group graduate to swimming lessons in the bathtub.

Following that, they will be released onto a large pond next spring when they're all grown up.

Mother Duck treads on one of her ducklings, Britain - 01 Jul 2009
THE YOUNGSTER THAT FORGOT TO DUCK

This unlucky youngster's failure to duck certainly led to a few ruffled feathers.

The duckling and his siblings were all out for a wander with mum when an unfortunate incident occurred.

Maybe their bird-brained parent wanted to show who is boss, or maybe she just simply wasn't looking where she was going.

After all when you've got four youngsters to care for you can often find them under your feet and in the way.

Which may go some way towards explaining why, on its way to have his first swim, this duckling ended up squashed under his mother's foot.

The incident was captured by eagle eyed photographer Ben Storey who caught the youngster's being literally flattened by love.

Happily the duckling emerged unscathed from the incident and both mother and baby seemed unconcerned.

Following the flattening the mother duck simply giving her youngster a quick glance to check he was ok before waddling off.

KEEPING WARM DOWN ON THE FARM

The mild weather at the beginning of the year fooled many an animal, causing spring babies to start appearing as early as February.

Unfortunately, the mild weather didn't last and Easter weekend saw an arctic blast of weather that left much of the UK covered in snow, and meant a cold start to April..

However, these recently born additions to Pennywell Farm in Buckfastleigh, Devon, have found a novel way to keep warm.

Cuddling together into one big huddle in the farmyard the new additions keep each other warm, and it doesn't even matter what species you are.

We promise, we aren't telling porkies.

When Hiroko the cat's three kittens died she didn't have time to mourn their loss - she simply became surrogate mother to two ducklings.
The 3-year-old lost all her babies within days of them being born, but when her owners, Norio and Yoshiko Endo of Saitama Prefecture, Japan, accidentally left the cat with the newly hatched ducklings she immediately began caring for them as if they were her own. Mr Endo had bought a pair of spot-billed duck eggs from a local farmer, but when they hatched he shut Hiroko into the same room as the ducklings by mistake. When he re-entered the room he found the motherly pussy grooming the ducks and treating them as if they were her kittens and now the fluffy ducks have waddled into her life Hiroko is the happiest cat in town.
