South Korea Green Algae Alert
Green algae cover the lake at Daecheong Lake in Daejeon, South Korea, on August 23, 2025. Green algae blooms occur when nutrients like nitrogen and phosphorus from land are washed into water bodies by rain, and water temperatures rise, creating ideal conditions for harmful cyanobacteria to thrive. Cyanobacteria, a type of phytoplankton, are essential components of aquatic ecosystems. However, when they proliferate excessively, they can produce foul odors, degrade water quality, and even cause fish deaths. This year, green algae in Daecheong Lake begin spreading in the latter part of last month. (Photo by Seung-il Ryu/NurPhoto) -

Tiny needles made of silk could be used to apply nutrients to farm crops so the chemicals don’t end up in the air or soil.
These hollow microneedles can also be used to monitor plant health.
Researchers tested their ability to deliver iron to iron-deficient tomato plants, which can cause a disease known as chlorosis.
Chlorosis can decrease yields, but treating it by spraying crops is inefficient and can have environmental side effects.
The researchers showed that their microneedles could be used for the sustained delivery of iron without harming the plants.
The researchers, a team from the USA’s Massachusetts Institute of Technology and scientists from Singapore also showed the micro-needles could be used to fortify crops while they grow.
Historically, crop fortification efforts have focused on minerals like zinc or iron, with vitamins only added after the food is harvested.
In each case, the researchers applied the microneedles to the stalks of plants by hand.
But the team envisions equipping autonomous vehicles and other equipment already used in farms to automate and scale the process.
OPS: These optical and scanning electron microscope images show the microneedle and zoom in at the tip of the microneedle.

An architecture competition that hopes to build lives for humans in space and in the sea has been launched.
The International Future Architecture competition asks entrants to imagine a life where water and space would be populated.
Organisers The Jacques Rougerie Foundation say that the Earth's growing population and a potential sea level rise creates the need for new ideas about where humans can live.
Highlights of previous entries include Neck of the Moon, by El Hadi Jazairy, which sees space debris in the orbital environment compacting into a new 'second moon' called Laika.
Another lunar idea was Moon Origin Point by Miloje Krunic; an autonomous habitat for up to 20 million people designed to utilse the Moon's "abundant mineral resources".

Top five NASA Landsat observation satellites images of Earth - 24 Jul 2012

Top five NASA Landsat Satellites Images of Earth
During a span of 40 years, since 1972, the Landsat series of Earth observation satellites has become a vital reference worldwide for understanding scientific issues related to land use and natural resources.
Beyond the scientific information they supply, some Landsat images are simply striking to look at, presenting spectacular views of mountains, valleys, and islands as well as forests, grasslands, and agricultural patterns.
By selecting certain features and colouring them from a digital palate, the U.S. Geological Survey has created a series of "Earth as Art" perspectives that demonstrate an artistic resonance in satellite land imagery and provide a special avenue of insight about the geography of each scene.
NASA asked the public to vote on their favourite images from the more than 120 images in the online "Earth as Art" collection. From over 14,000 votes the top five winners were:
1st Place: Van Gogh from Space Landsat 7 Acquired 7/13/2005. In the style of Van Gogh's painting "Starry Night," massive congregations of greenish phytoplankton swirl in the dark water around Gotland, a Swedish island in the Baltic Sea. Population explosions, or blooms, of phytoplankton, like the one shown here, occur when deep currents bring nutrients up to sunlit surface waters, fuelling the growth and reproduction of these tiny plants.
2nd Place: Yukon Delta Landsat 7 Acquired 9/22/2002. Countless lakes, sloughs, and ponds are scattered throughout this scene of the Yukon Delta in southwest Alaska. One of the largest river deltas in the world, and protected as part of the Yukon Delta National Wildlife Refuge, the river's sinuous waterways seem like blood vessels branching out to enclose an organ.
3rd Place: Meandering Mississippi Landsat 7 Acquired 5/28/2003. ...

*full story: http://www.rexfeatures.com/nanolink/f8q9* A 17-year-old girl who has eaten little else but chicken nuggets for the past 15 years had to be rushed to hospital after collapsing. Stacey Irvine has lived on a diet of nuggets and the occasional portion of chips since she was a toddler. Claiming to have never tasted fresh fruit or vegetables, the consequences of her chicken nugget addiction became clear recently when she had to be taken to hospital. The teen was forced to seek treatment after collapsing with difficulties breathing. Doctors discovered she was suffering from anaemia and that the veins in her tongue were inflamed. In addition, her body was so deficient in certain vitamins and nutrients that she had to be injected with them. Stacey has now been urged to drastically change her diet before she does herself irreparable harm, but is finding it difficult to combat her addiction.
