No birdsong, no water in the creek, no beating wings: how a haven for nature fell silent. Sugarloaf Ridge state park.
As the soundscape of the natural world began to disappear over 30 years, one man was listening and recording it all.
30 years ago, Bernie Krause made his first audio clip in Sugarloaf Ridge state park, 20 minutes' drive from his house near San Francisco.
As a soundscape recordist, Krause had travelled around the world listening to the planet. But in 1993 he turned his attention to what was happening on his doorstep.

FEATURE - Jaulen, Quaken und Knurren: Beweis für den Erfolg eines Projekts zur Wiederherstellung von Korallenriffen in Indonesien
VIDEO AVAILABLE: CONTACT INFO@COVERMG.COM
Whoops, croaks, and growls have been hailed by scientists as proof a coral reef restoration project in Indonesia has been a roaring success.
Thousands of square metres of coral are being grown on previously destroyed reefs in islands in central Indonesia, but previously it was unclear whether these new corals would revive the entire reef ecosystem.
Now a new study, led by researchers from the University of Exeter and the University of Bristol in England, has found them in a heathy state - complete with their own never before recorded soundscape.
These video and images show the process of restoring the reef from a degraded state, and the growth of the coral habitat over three years. As well as audio recordings to assess life on the reef.
"Restoration projects can be successful at growing coral, but that’s only part of the ecosystem," said lead author Dr Tim Lamont, of the University of Exeter and the Mars Coral Reef Restoration Project, which is restoring the reefs in central Indonesia.
"This study provides exciting evidence that restoration really works for the other reef creatures too – by listening to the reefs, we’ve documented the return of a diverse range of animals."
Professor Steve Simpson, from the University of Bristol, added: "Some of the sounds we recorded are really bizarre, and new to us as scientists.
"We have a lot still to learn about what they all mean and the animals that are making them. But for now, it’s amazing to be able to hear the ecosystem come back to life."
Work on the restoration project began in 2013, with locals and experts using hexagonal metal frames called ‘Reef Stars’ are seeded with coral and laid over a large area. The Reef Stars stabilise loose rubble and kickstart rapid coral growth, leading to the revival of the wider ecosystem.
Scientists could see that life has returned to the reef just by looking at the diverse life that had returned to the reef but also used ac
