Royal Ascot, Berkshire, Britain - 16 Jun 2009
The centrepiece of the course's year, Royal Ascot is one of the world's most famous race meetings, dating back to 1711 and with the Royal family arriving each day by carriage. A major event in the social calendar, press coverage of attendees and their wardrobes often exceeds coverage of any racing. The Royal Enclosure has a strict dress code: men in full morning dress and top hat, with ladies also in hats and not showing midriffs or shoulders. Outside the Enclosure the code is less severe, but many choose to go formal anyway. Traditionally admittance to the Royal Enclosure for the first time requires one to be a member's guest or sponsored for membership by a member who has attended at least four times. Over 300,000 people make the annual visit to Berkshire, many knowing nothing about racing, purely there for the drinking and socialising. There are 16 Group races on offer, the Ascot Gold Cup is on Ladies' Day (Thursday) and there is over 6,000,000 pounds of prize money on offer.
