About 1.8m cubic metres of sand has been pumped onto the beaches in front of the Bacton gas terminal (which imports a third of all UK gas supplies) and the villages of Bacton and Walcott in Norfolk UK. The sand has been extracted from existing licensed offshore areas near Great Yarmouth and brought to the beaches by Dutch firm, Team Van Oord's 230m-long Ham 318 trailing suction hopper dredger. It has then been pumped through metal pipes onto the beach where bulldozers have put it in position.
The project is expected to provide protection to the gas terminal for about 20 years.

COASTER DRIVEN ASHORE IN GALE AT DOVER

The 250-ton British coastal Collier ' Arch Glenn' was driven ashore at East Cliff, Dover, in the severe gale which swept the Straits of Dover today.
The vessel, loaded with coal, broke her moorings, and after going ashore was pounded by rough seas until she turned over and disappeared under huge waves.
Members of the crew were rescued by means of a long ladder from the ship to a stone jetty.

ANGRY SEAS SMASH INTO SANDGATE FRONT

Angry seas froth through a breach in the garden wall of the Varne house in Sandgate Road at Sandgate, near Folkestone, Kent, where channel gales have caused widespread damage.
Fresh gale warnings urged residents into even greater efforts to improve defences after the weekend pounding was received by the town.
Great holes have been torn in the sea defences, while huge waves have undermined part of the sea wall supporting the historic Sandgate Castle.
