Hen Power initiative, which pairs older people in assisted living with their own chicken, Gateshead, Britain - Mar 2013
Mandatory Credit: Photo by Mark Henderson / Rex Features (2210300l)
'Hensioners' Prove They Aren't Chicken
A group of 'hensioners' are taking part in an innovative project that has seen them paired up with chickens.
The aim of the HenPower initiative is to help people - and particularly men - who are part of assisted living schemes to feel more engaged.
The 18-month long project has seen men and women from Gateshead equipped with the skills and knowledge needed to care for their very own hen.
As part of this participants have been involved in designing their own hen house, choosing which hens they like, learning how to care for them and how to rear chicks.
One of the main aims of HenPower is to encourage older people - with an emphasis on men - who live in supported housing to access activities which are socially engaging and relevant to them.
And it has proven to be such a success that there are now hopes to roll out the initiative across the country.
The Gateshead groups, who have affectionately become known as 'hensioners', have even started running 'hen road shows'.
This sees them take their learning to other older people and share with them firsthand their chicken related experiences
Douglas Hunter, Director of Equal Arts, who manages the project, says: "The project aims to improve the quality of life for older people and particularly older men who maybe isolated or lonely.
"Older men's first experience of care settings is often during a crises point. We want this to change and for older men to feel empowered and confident about any transition to living with care".

Man builds world's fastest fully functioning toilet, Lincolnshire, Britain - 22 May 2013

World's Fastest Toilet Means You Can Flush And Go At 55mph
A plumber has built the world's fastest fully-functioning toilet - which whizzes along and even flushes at an incredible 55mph.
Colin Furze, 33, has spent a month building the breakneck bog, which has a powerful 140cc motorbike engine hidden under the seat and four gears.
He has even filled the high-speed toilet with water so it can be flushed using a button on the handle bars and added a clip so he can read the newspaper while he zooms along.
The petrol-powered lavatory can almost reach the national speed limit and does 10 miles to the gallon.
"It is quite scary to drive as the water in the toilet makes it very top heavy and I get wet when I go over any bumps," said Colin, from Stamford, Lincs.
"The toilet seat is also quite slippery so it's hard to stay on and stop myself from sliding off when I go fast. It's also pretty tricky to steer."
Colin, who works as a plumber and has often been called out to fix and install toilets, decided to build the super loo as a bit of fun.
He used a mobility scooter for the base, then made a steel frame with a wooden plinth and mounted the white toilet on top.
He has fitted four electronic gears to the handlebars and built a manual override, disguised as a toilet brush in case they fail.
Colin has also added a towel rail to the back of the toilet, covered the base with black and white lino tiles and turned the exhaust into a toilet roll holder to make it look authentic.
"I'm a plumber and I'm used to putting toilets together so I thought I'd try the challenge of making the fastest," said Colin.
"I've seen people build them before using mopeds, but I've given mine a more powerful engine so it can go much faster."
Colin has managed to get the toilet to travel at an amazing 55mph, but believ...

Shed of the Year 2013 competition entrants, Britain - Feb 2013
Entrants for the 2013 Shed of the Year competition are now being accepted. But forget your common garden shed, those entered in this competition are on a whole new level. They've been converted into pubs, diners, Chinese pagodas, boats and even clad in CDs by their fanatical owners. The contest, which is sponsored by garden woodcare brand Cuprinol, has already attracted more than 2,000 entries this year. Researchers from Cuprinol found that the typical owner spends over a year of their life in their shed. Almost 50 per cent of the 1,000 owners surveyed say they would be lost without their sheds, with 12 per cent preferring time there to being with their family. Nominations for the competition close on May 3rd, while the winners will be announced in the first week of July.
