Perseid Meteor shower over Chapel of Garioch, near Inverurie,Scotland
    Perseid meteor shower, Inverurie,Scotland - 12 Aug 2017
The Perseid meteor shower takes place each year through July and August and is the result of particles falling from the Comet Swift-Tuttle, which orbits the sun every 133 years and was first seen in 1862. The trail of particles forms meteors, or shooting stars as they are also known, which heat up as they enter the EarthÕs atmosphere creating tails of light across the sky. These specific meteors travel at a speed of 132,000 miles per hour and are called Perseids due to the way in which they appear to streak away from the Perseus Constellation

    HIGH RES VERSION

Pictured: Perseid and Milky Way above River Stour at at Sturminster Newton Mill.

A photographer who is inspired by spectacular landscapes has conjured up a unique impression of Britain's night skies. Stephen Banks, 27, uses a special augmented reality app to track and take pictures of the positions of the stars.

He then lies back for several hours at a time while his camera is busy snapping away taking long exposure shots to build up detail in the final image. His photographs are inspired by the landscapes and landmarks in Dorset, where he lives, including Durdle Door and Lulworth Cove. SEE OUR COPY FOR DETAILS.

A photographer has captured a series of stunning images of Hawaii.

The series includes pictures of the Milky Way, meteors, tropical waterfalls and striking coastlines.

Photographer Ulderico Granger, 19, grew up in Hawaii, and couldn't help but develop a fascination with nature.

Ulderico said: "I suppose I take photos to capture moments of purity and for me, those occur in nature. I am on a journey to find the genuine. I see photography as a tool through which we can preserve the beauty of life."

Is This The Most Amazing Selfie Ever: Meteor Explodes Over Campsite Self-Portrait
In the week that 'selfie' was named word of the year by Oxford Dictionaries, this must be the most spectacular self-portrait ever taken.

Photographer Scott Rinckenberger wanted to capture a picture of himself and a friend on their last night of camping in the California wilderness on 7 November.

But when Scott set the timer on his camera and scurried back to his camping stool he had no idea that a METEOR would explode at exactly the right time and in the correct place in his picture.

Scott was enjoying his final evening of a project which had seen him shooting autumn landscapes in the American West. But he had been feeling disappointed as he hadn't created a truly great shot.

To capture the moment, he set his camera up on a tripod on top of his truck and joined his friend Hayden back at the campfire.

His picture, which he believes could be a billions to one occurrence, captured a meteor which saw social media light up with the sighting. Local news reported the meteor streaking across California at around 8pm.

The meteor was likely associated with the South Taurids meteor shower that has been active in November and made meteor sightings four or five times as likely. The debris is coming from Comet Encke, which is currently passing through the solar system.

    Local News Video:: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kBf95Ds2nrk

Scott explains: "I've been shooting photos for 20 years. I've made my living in the profession for the last 15. I can count on one hand the number of times that everything lined up perfectly and a truly rare image...

A shooting star streaks across the sky above Mow Cop Castle near Biddulph, Staffordshire. The shooting stars , part of the annual Perseid meteor shower, were bright enough to be seen through the orange tinted clouds lit by street lights towards Manchester in the north.
