Hungarian capital's famous landmarks such as the Parliamemt building and the Chain Bridge over the Danube are seen under a grey blanket of fog and smog. Air pollution levels have risen rapidly over several freezing, windless days, after Budapest's mayor issued the capital's full-scale smog alert
Budapest's Mayor issues a full-scale smog alert for Budapest, Hungary - Jan 2009
The smog increase is being caused partly by power plants that were forced to switch from natural gas to more polluting fuels after gas shipments from Russia through Ukraine to Europe were suspended last week. As the smog alert was issued on an even date, only vehicles with even-numbered registration plates were permitted on the roads.

New York, 2008-12-23 / New celeb parents NAOMI WATTS and LIEV SCHREIBER first outing with baby SAMUEL KAI. A makeupless - and slightly wrinkled - NAOMI was seen as she tenderly carried new baby son SAMUEL KAI (born just 10 days ago) out of her downtown New York apartment with a nanny and fiancŽ/babydaddy actor LIEV in tow. This is the first time NAOMI has been photographed with SAMUEL. Wonder where the whole family will be spending Christmas? NAOMI and LIEV have another son together, 17-month-old ALEXANDER PETE. NAOMI seems to be looking a bit tired but still very good for just giving birth especially at 40 years old. Do you think NAOMI is looking good so soon after giving birth... ** US & AUS out ** / Los Angeles, 2008-11-19 / Pop star GWEN STEFANI is a pro with her kids KINGSTON and ZUMA. GWEN may either be the best and most calm mom with sons KINGSTON and baby ZUMA - that or shes a pro with the paparazzi. GWEN was followed as she made her way through the Los Angeles airport after arriving from Cabo San Lucas on an American Airlines flight (no private jet for her) with father DENNIS, mother PATTI, sons KINGSTON and ZUMA and a nanny without breaking a sweat or getting upset (or at least looking upset). GWEN held on to 3-month-old ZUMA and later had to take KINGSTON from the nanny (after he rode on the luggage cart) because he became upset and started to cry. Also notice GWEN carried a Harajuku Lovers makeup bag (Harajuku Lovers - www.harajukulovers.com - is GWEN'S brainchild clothes and accessory line inspired by her L.A.M.B phase and the Japanese girls she toted around during the promotion of that album). GWEN also wore her plaid straw fedora and tortoiseshell shades. Also partway through GWEN'S trip to her waiting car she sat down to make a phone call. Maybe calling husband musician GAVIN ROSSDALE to let him know they were home from their trip.

The Queen and a kilt wearing Duke of Edinburgh and Prince of Wales have been enjoying the action at the annual Braemar Gathering in Aberdeenshire. The Queen is patron of the gathering, which takes place in the picturesque village of Braemar on the first Saturday in September. The event coincides with the Queen's annual two-month holiday at nearby Balmoral Castle. The royal family joined an estimated 16,000 people to watch the traditional Scottish games on offer, which date back to the 11th century. From their pavilion, the Queen, the Duke and the Prince watched various events, including caber-tossing, hammer throwing, Highland dancing and tug of war

    Animal Hospital .

There are many dispensaries and clinics for sick animals in Britain, but the Blue Cross animal Hospital at No.1 Hugh Street, behind London's Victoria station, is the only real, fully-equipped hospital in the country. It has most of the aids enjoyed by hospitals for humans, including an x-ray unit, an operating theatre, ambulances and trained nurses. Last year over 23,000 animals visited a doctor for treatment : of these18,000 were given surgical or other help by the staff and the other 5,000 were found homes, painlessly destroyed or otherwise dealt with. There is no charge for treatment. Each owner is asked to make a donation to the funds, but last year the cost of maintaining the hospital amounted to 9,000 pounds more than the donations. The balance is made up by the mother organisation, the Blue Cross, which has branches in clinics in most of Britain's largest towns. The Blue Cross itself has an income entirely derived from donations.

    BABY IT'S COLD OUTSIDE !

It's obvious the South African bush babies take a poor view of their first English winter- an outlook they share with many Britons. But it isn't entirely London's zero-seeking temperatures that make them look so sad as they peak inquisitively over the edge of that comforting blanket at the London zoo. those large eyes give them a naturally mournful look.

    WEATHER FORECAST

Autumn , the the season of mists and mellow fruitfulness' (according to the Poet), is also the season of nippy breezes, chills, and the ' common cold '. And Jerry, this tame tawny owl of the London zoo, insists on being practical , is wrapped up comfortably in a wool blanket, almost as if he is predicting a winter in which extra blankets are an appropriate addition to the household.

GOVERNMENT SPEEDS UP NEW NURSERY CENTRES FOR YOUNG CHILDREN OF EVACUEE MOTHERS

The Government plan for the setting up of emergency nursery centres in reception areas for the young children of evacuees is being speeded up. With the co-operation of the Ministry of the Ministry of Health and the Board of Education, the Nursery Schools Association has launched a campaign to establish centres. The problem of accommodation has become very serious and a woman architect has drawn up a plan for the construction of nursery centres, which would accommodate up to 50 children. the first two of this type will be openend in Guildford in a fortnight. It will give the evacuee mothers an opportunity to do war work knowing that their children are well cared for.
