A pack of robotic coyotes is being used by the US military to deter wildlife from posing a risk at its airfields.
Three of the realistic-looking plastic predators have been mounted on unmanned, autonomous four wheel ground vehicles to patrol bases.
The prototypes are aimed at preventing accidents such as bird strikes.
The deterrent has been developed by the USA’s Engineer Research and Development Center and the Army Corps of Engineers
They collaborated with the country’s agriculture department and National Wildlife Research Center in Ohio to test the system’s effectiveness at deterring wildlife through various research trials.
A spokesperson said successful demonstrations were later held at Naval Air Stations Whiting Field and Pensacola in Florida and Fort Campbell in Kentucky, clearing the path for the project’s future development.
