A photo of a rescue dog panting in the long grass has won first prize in a competition to capture pictures of Britain's pets. The picture, taken by Yvette Roberts Shaw, was chosen from among more than 600 photos of cats and dogs in the annual contest run by PetSavers, a charity which is part of the British Small Animal Veterinary Association. This year's contest encouraged amateur photographers to take pictures of their pets at one of those special moments when they melt their heart. The competition was judged by staff at the British Small Animal Veterinary Association. Yvette, from Caerphilly, Wales, said: "Cassie is our rescue and is a Staffie x Boxer. She was in shelters for the majority of her younger years and was moved from Coventry to Bristol as she kept getting overlooked.

Mimo the cat asleep with one toy mouse on his head
Mimo the cat sleeps soundly despite toy mice, Japan - 01 Feb 2016
A cat owner was so impressed by their pet's ability to sleep soundly they tested him out - by placing toy MICE all over his body.

The Japanese feline fan snapped Mimo the cat in a typically laid-back snoozing position.

Lying on his back and sprawled on a comfy duvet, Mimo didn't flinch a whisker when one plush rodent was gently plonked onto his head.

A further TWENTY meeces liberally placed about the head? Not a flicker.

So, a full-body mouse blanket ensued, with a top-to-toe covering in the critters.

The mysterious - and michevious - 22-year-old owner, known only as Mimoza, tells REX Shutterstock: "He didn't wake up, so I played a trick".

A photographer has captured a series of stunning photos of the Peruvian landscape.

Photographer Brian Flaherty created the Notes from Peru photo series to document his journey across the southern Peruvian landscape, from the rugged extremes of the Andes to the vast expanse of desert at the Pacific.

Brian, who is from San Francisco, said: "Throughout the journey I was struck by both the deep history and character of the land and the inhabitants who weather its elements with grace, fortitude and a posture of humility.

"This series of photos provides a small glimpse of the strength of this land and its people."

Tesfale sits on his bed in a dormitory that sleeps 12 boys. With the school in a dire state of funding, the children suffer from poor food provision, leading to lethargy and tiredness. Coupled with their entrapment on the campus due to their condition, this means that many of the children spend large amounts of the day lying on their beds. There are, however, some opportunities to be active. Tesfale is an avid Manchester United football supporter. When the other boys are feeling up to it, they enjoy bouts of 5-a-side football on the dusty pitch, using a ball equipped with a small bell inside

Gebrom stands waiting for his next lesson at the local sighted school. Being a Grade 8 student, he sleeps at the Mek'ele Blind School, venturing to the other school on his own each day where he carries on his further education. Once at the school, he joins in with lessons in Social Sciences and English, with aspirations of studying Law at Mek'ele University. He shares the same textbooks and desk with sighted peers; the only visible difference being he cannot afford the school uniform

"After smelling the hand of Lea for a while he decided to use her lap as a pillow. It didn't take long before he boldly climbed all the way into her lap and fell asleep on top of her."

Seal pups on a beach in Pembrokeshire, Britain - 10 Oct 2014
Peep-poe! This adorable baby seal appears to be playing a game as he peers from behind a clump of seaweed. Wildlife photographer Drew Buckley snapped the playful pup as it hid on a beach in Pembrokshire. This stretch of coastline is a very important breeding area during the autumn months for the Atlantic Grey seal. And Drew captured a number of adorable fluffy white youngsters as they lazed about on the beach enjoying a snooze. Half of the world's population of grey seals are found around British coasts. The cows haul up and give birth to their pups over August through to November. The pups remain on land where they suckle from their mother for up to three weeks. A female's milk contains up to 60% fat, so pups grow very quickly, gaining about 2kg in weight each day. This weight gain consists mainly of a layer of blubber below their skin, which is vital insulation when they go to sea.

    You can't sea me!

A sea otter dozes happily - disguised as a lump of seaweed.

Wildlife photographer Michael Yang had spent the day haplessly searching for otters in Monterey, California, before his wife pointed out a suspicious floating pile of kelp.

His amazing pictures show the marine mammal seemingly hiding from the world in order to get some peaceful sleep.

And, hilariously, the otter unwrapped itself for a good shake of its fur before rewrapping itself in kelp and once again nodding off.

Michael says: "The sea otter was well camouflaged. Despite being right next to a walk path, most people walked right by without even noticing the dozing otter. Sea otters sometimes wrap themselves up in kelp so they won't float off while they are sleeping. This sea otter took it one step further and covered its face with the kelp like an eye mask."

Boy Finds Fox Asleep In Bed
A schoolboy had the shock of his life when he discovered a fox asleep in his bed.

Alexander West, nine, was stunned to see the baby fox snuggled in his duvet in his bedroom on the second floor of his home.

The youngster had left the back door of the townhouse open when he ran outside to play and the female fox had crept inside and made herself at home.

"Alexander shouted down saying there was a fox in his bed, but I didn't believe him," said mum Dina Luminati-West.

"I thought it must be our cat asleep on his bed, but then I saw the long pointed nose and realised it was indeed a fox.

"I was absolutely shocked, but Alexander was quite excited and pleased she had chosen his room. I said it was because it was so messy."

The small fox is believed to have been in the house for up to four hours before being discovered.

Traces show she crept in through the back door then up to the second floor, where she tried the main bedroom before settling on Alexander's bed for a nap.

"His bed wasn't made and she must have liked the look of his warm duvet," said Dina, from Hemel Hempstead, Herts.

"We've seen foxes in a den at the back of our house since moving here 12 years ago but we've never heard of them going in any of the houses here.

"She was in a bit of a poor state and was probably looking for somewhere nice to stay for a few hours.

"Alexander loves animals, but a bedroom's not the best place for a fox. We'll be keeping our door firmly shut from now on."

After discovering the fox, Dina shut the bedroom door and for help from the RSPCA who took the animal away.

California sea otter rests and sleeps on its back with folded arms
Take It Easy: Sea Otters at Rest
Talk about taking it easy, these sea otters know how to relax in style.

A group of around forty California Sea Otters were snapped by wildlife photographer Michael Yang as they snoozed off the coast of Moss Landing, California.

The marine mammals rest by floating on their backs but find they slowly drift into shore whereupon they wake up and paddle back out to repeat the process.

That is, apart from one enterprising otter that anchored itself in place with kelp.

Michael explains: "While resting, each otter seemed to have its own peculiar way of arranging its paws. Some otters put their paws on their chest, some cover their eyes, and some put their paws straight up as if they were signalling a touchdown. This is just one example of anthropomorphic characteristics which make the sea otters so enjoyable to watch and why people label sea otters as "cute."

"Because of the tides, this raft of sea otters was constantly being pushed towards the shore where we were. Whenever they got too close, one otter would stir up, causing a chain reaction waking everyone up. Once awake, the otters would swim away from the shore and go back to resting, starting the cycle again.

"One sea otter was stationary in the water while resting because he had anchored himself with what we think is kelp. While the rest of the group floated one way and swam the other, he remained mostly in place.

"If they aren't resting or feeding, they are cleaning. The cleaning process adds air to the fur which helps them to float."

Alaskan Brown Bear getting ready to take a nap in river with a fish it has caught
Bear-ly Awake: Brown Bear Snoozes With Fishy Catch
It's hard work catching fish - just ask this dozy bear who took a nap after landing a salmon.

Wildlife photographer Rick Sheremeta snapped the brown bear nodding off in a river while still clutching it's tasty catch.

He explains: "I spent four days observing brown coastal bears at McNeil River Falls on the Alaskan Peninsula some 290 miles southwest of Anchorage.

"One adult female bear named Yolanda, by local guides, was particular interesting to watch - not only was she fairly high up in the bear pecking order thus allowing her unchallenged access to her favorite spot, but she was an excellent fisherwomen - snatching fish repeatedly time after time.

"On my last day out at the Falls, she was particularly active. She would snare a large fish and walk it into the shallows where she would sit and consume it at her leisure. She did this time and time again but never did we see her leave the water to take a nap break like all the other bears routinely did.

"Well, I guess all this frantic activity finally got the best of her - she finally wandered into the calm pool just as she had done numerous times before, sat down, cradled her catch under her arm and promptly nodded off.

"Unfortunately, her nap was fairly short lived since her little slumber pad also happened to be an active byway for other bears traveling to and from the River - after a few moments of blissful slumber she was rudely awakened by other some other denizen splashing through the water.

"Even though the scene was short-lived, it was a once in a million moment that I was lucky enough to document and capture with my camera."

At least she has a delicious snack to wake up to.

Small enough to be used legally on the pavement or inside a shop, the GBP 5,500 QTvan is so named because it caters to three peculiarly British obsessions: caravans; queuing and tea. The tiny caravan is ideally suited to queuing overnight for the sales or tickets for Wimbledon fortnight, and boasts tea-making facilities to make any long wait bearable.According to the Environmental Transport Association (ETA), the QTvan is ideal for the estimated 220,000 people who use a mobility scooter without breakdown cover, and who face the prospect of a very long wait should they suffer a mechanical fault or their battery runs flat. Spokesman for the ETA, Yannick Read, said: (FOTO:DUKAS/REX)
