Stolen 'Le Jardin' Matisse painting returned to Stockholm museum after 25 years, London, Britain - 21 Jan 2013
A Matisse painting stolen from the Modern Museum in Stockholm has finally been returned after 25 years. Le Jardin, which is thought to be worth $1millon, was stolen from the museum in 1987 by a sledgehamer wielding burglar. Shortly afterwards the thieves unsuccessfully tried to ransom the painting back to the museum. Its whereabouts for the past 25 years are unknown but it was discovered in Essex at the end of last year. Dealer Charles Roberts was asked to sell the painting by an elderly man from Poland who said he had owned the piece since the 1990s. Mr Roberts got in touch with the Art Loss Register in London, who identified the painting as a stolen work. Recently, curators from the Modern Museum travelled over to London to escort the carefully packed artwork back to Sweden.
