His comments came before a meeting with Congressional leaders in an attempt to get them to back his proposed $300 billion 'American Recovery and Reinvestment Plan', which aims to 'create or save' three million jobs by 2011 and which contains tax breaks for individuals and businesses. The meeting came as part of a series of talks on what was Obama’s first day of work since moving from Chicago to Washington. During the day he also met with Nancy Pelosi, the Democratic speaker of the House of Congress, and Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid. As well as talks with his fellow Democrats, Obama also spoke with opposition Republican leaders from the Senate and House of Representatives, as part of his efforts to win bipartisan support for his recovery plan.
