Silk production - from worm to catwalk, southern India - 2010
SILK PRODUCTION - FROM WORM TO CATWALK
For many silk - the Queen of all fabrics - spells luxury, elegance, class and comfort.
But for hundreds of thousands of people in India it is something much more mundane but infinitely important - a vital life line.
An estimated 700,000 people are involved in various sericulture (silk production) activities in India.
Half of all the silk produced in India comes from the region of Karnataka where a sub-tropical climate allows for year-round production.
In 2007-08 India exported more than GBP 400 million of raw silk, carpets and ready made garments.
In 2007 alone it produced 18,320 metric tonnes of raw silk, making it the second a largest silk producer in the world.
It is second only behind China, which produced 108,420 metric tonnes of raw silk in the same period.
While the difference is vast, India's contribution is even more impressive considering that much of its production is done using outdated tools or by hand.
Ultimately, however, poor technology and high production costs undermine the vital role played by sericulture in improving India's rural economy.
The Worm
The Silkworm Seed Production Centre in Mysore is run by Professor N.M. Biram Saheb.
He explains that the Indian government pioneered the provision of disease free lays of eggs as a way of improving yields without increasing start-up costs
The practice means that farmers are provided with a steady stream of healthy silkworm eggs.
It is deep in the seed production centre where the 'work' of creating these eggs takes place - in darkened rooms where moths are laid out on newspaper in racks of plastic trays.
Powerhouses of the silk industry they may be, but in reality they are pale weaklings whose only purpose is to mate...

A trio of tiny Empusa Mantis larvae march along the stem of a rose, passing a thorn
Amazing close-up pictures show deadly beauty of mantises, Costa Brava, Spain - 07 Sep 2010
With bulbous eyes and their strange stick-like bodies, these mantises look like creatures from another planet. Perched on the tiny stem of a plant, one insect enjoys a lunch of tiny yellow aphids. Another picture shows a mantis about to pounce on an unwitting butterfly and one incredible shot even shows the creatures in larvae form, not much bigger than a thorn. These incredible close-ups were snapped by wildlife enthusiast Jimmy Hoffman. The 50-year-old scours the vegetation around his home in the Costa Brava, Spain, looking for the insects. He said: "I've been interested in nature since I was a child and I've always had an eye for wildlife, especially insects. "Praying mantids are my favourite because of their special predatory behaviour, shapes and colours".

Car Thief Smashes Through Level Crossing Moments Before Train
A car thief put the lives of hundreds of people at risk by smashing through a railway crossing moments before a train passed.
Terence Fowler, 20, stole a red Mercedes C180 from outside a home in March, Cambridgeshire, on the morning of June 20 last year.
The stolen car triggered an Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) camera in Peterborough and police officers were alerted.
However, when they tried to pull him over he refused and a high speed pursuit ensued at speeds of more than 90 miles per hour.
During the pursuit, Fowler drove on the wrong side of the road, overtook vehicles on roundabouts and knocked off another vehicle's wing mirror.
Police eventually abandoned the pursuit because it was too dangerous.
And they could only watch as Fowler ploughed through a closed level crossing with a Cross Country train just seconds away.
Passengers reported feeling the carriages shudder as the train smashed into the barrier debris moments after Fowler's car had crashed through.
The vehicle was later found abandoned nearby and forensic tests discovered Fowler's blood on the smashed windscreen.
Traced using his DNA, he was caught after being arrested in Bournemouth for an assault.
He pleaded guilty to dangerous driving, aggravated vehicle taking, criminal damage, obstructing an engine or carriage using a railway and driving with no insurance.
He was then sentenced to three-and-a-half years at Peterborough Crown Court on 14 April 2011.
Detective Inspector Michael Branston said: "Fowler showed total disregard for other road users, pedestrians and rail passengers as he tried to evade being caught by police.
"His actions put many lives at risk and he was lucky not to have been killed himself.
"This case shows that no matt...

*EXCLUSIVE* Sean Preston Hoops It Up!
*EXCLUSIVE* Los Angeles, CA - Kevin Federline took his son Sean Preston to basketball practice today on an outdoor court. Sean recently finished his little league season of baseball and is quickly moving on to his next sport. Sean was very active out on the court today, shooting and passing the ball every opportunity he had. At one point, he got his finger jammed when the ball was passed to him and he shook it off like a tough guy. Kevin played around with a few of the other dads while the kids had a blast and began learning the game.

Species of lizardfish lies in wait for passing fish while half buried in the sand. By day the fish is almost invisibly camouflaged, but the ultraviolet blue light reveals bright green fluorescent skin.

Ultraviolet Undersea Life
A new collection of photographs capture the beauty of underwater life.
Award-winning photographer Louise Murray has spent the majority of her years travelling the globe documenting awesome scenery and wildlife from every country she has visited.
During that time she has often dived underwater to photograph marine creatures amongst the coral reef.
Her latest collection was captured while diving in the dark waters of Tondoba Bay in the Red Sea of Egypt.
The fluorescent images occur when near an ultraviolet torch.
Highlights include a giant clam that appears dull under natural light but glows bright red under the blue hue; a pipefish hunting at night glows orange and camouflaged fish made visible by the ultraviolet torch reveal their florescent green pigment making them known to their prey.
In comparison to the muted browns, golds, pinks and blues of a coral reef during the daytime "it looks like Oxford Street at Christmas," says Louise.
The wildlife photographer uses a powerful blue light to stimulate photosensitive pigments in the marine life, which then emit fluorescent colours.
Louise explains: "Almost all these photographs were shot after dark as the sunlight masks the colours.
"The stronger the light the better the results, I have to filter my camera and eyes with a yellow mask so the true colours are revealed.
"It can be very exciting when I find a new kind of fish or crab that glows orange, yellow or red, as they are extremely rar...

Canada goose survives after being shot with crossbow bolt, West Midlands, Britain - 07 Jan 2012
A Canada goose with remarkable fighting spirit has survived being shot with a crossbow. Following the attack the bird was left with a 15 inch crossbow bolt impaled through its body. Amazingly, it survived having the bolt removed and is now receiving specialist care at the Stapeley Grange Wildlife Centre in Nantwich. RSPCA Inspector Jackie Hickman commented: "This was a barbaric act of cruelty on a defenceless wild bird and I believe somebody must know who is responsible". She added: "I have dealt with a similar situation before where a farm animal was shot with a crossbow bolt and following DNA testing the perpetrator was identified and successfully prosecuted. "It is against the law to use any bow or crossbow against wild birds or other animals."
