MANDATORY CREDIT: /Jesse AllenNASA/Rex Features. Only for use in story about NASA.
Mandatory Credit: Photo by Jesse Allen/NASA/REX (4103955a)
As an island in the moist, atmospherically turbulent North Atlantic, Iceland is often shrouded in cloud cover and hard to observe from space. And lately, the island is making some of its own cloud cover, as the Earth has split open between the Bardarbunga and Askja volcanoes and spewed lava and hot gas.
The view of the Holuhraun lava field has been spectacular from the ground and from low-flying aircraft. Infrared imaging makes the view spectacular from space, too.
On September 6, 2014, the Operational Land Imager (OLI) on Landsat 8 captured this view of the ongoing eruption. The false-color images combine shortwave infrared, near infrared, and green light (OLI bands 6-5-3).
Ice and the plume of steam and sulfur dioxide appear cyan and bright blue, while liquid water is navy blue. Bare or rocky ground around the Holuhraun lava field appears in shades of green or brown in this band combination. Fresh lava is bright orange and red.

Anatomical body paintings by Danny Quirk, Massachusetts, America - 21 Jan 2013

Artist Danny Quirk uses liquid latex and Sharpie markers to make anatomical body paintings.
Graphic Body Art Will Get Under Your Skin
An artist has set out to show audiences what's really under his skin with his elaborate anatomical body illustrations.
Painting life-like muscles and ligaments across human skin, Danny Quirk's recreation of the human body opened up, shows that beauty is more than skin deep.
Danny's unique body art is created by applying liquid latex on to the skin, drawing out the anatomy with Sharpie pens and painting it with acrylics, sometimes taking up to nine hours to complete.
When it's finished, the designs simply peel off.
Inspired from the recent creation of his girlfriend's deathlike Halloween costume, the 25-year-old from Massachusetts, continued to use liquid latex and Sharpie markers to create anatomical drawings after her 'costume' went viral.
Anatomical themes appear often in his work, his second primary theme is capturing them in watercolours.
The series called 'Self Dissection' feature both men and women coolly stretching and unzipping pockets of flesh to expose their bones and organs underneath.
"I make the paintings with the notion of educating others and giving them something visually stimulating to look at.
"They aren't meant to be morbid but rather educational and aesthetic," explained Danny.

Grass snake spits out foul tasting common toad after attempting to eat it, Northampton, Britain - 10 Apr 2011
Mandatory Credit: Photo by Steve Wakefield/Solent News / Rex Features ( 1316661f )
Toad In The Hole
This toad hopped away dazed but unharmed after almost being swallowed whole by a snake - before being dramatically spat back out.
The amphibian had the lucky escape after secreting a foul-tasting liquid from the warts on its back as it was slowly consumed by the grass snake.
British photographer Steve Wakefield, 53, watched as the snake writhed in disgust before regurgitating its intended meal.
At first, in a bid to avoid being swallowed, the toad puffed itself up to look larger and scarier.
However, the snake wasn't put off and simply dislocated its jaw before pouncing on the toad among reeds on the Grand Union Canal near Northampton.
Steve, who watched the minute-long attack play out in front of him, said: "I was taking a stroll along the canal when I heard some thrashing about in the reads.
"At first I thought I was looking at some kind of lizard because it seemed to have feet at the front but I then realised it was actually a toad in a snake's mouth.
"The toad tried to defend itself by excreting the substance from its back, which gives it a very bad taste.
"It went down a long way before it was regurgitated and limped away slowly.
"The snake disappeared in the reeds in the other direction."
Steve, from Northampton, added: "It was an aggressive attack with a lot of twisting about.
"I was actually worried the snake would spit it out suddenly and bite me because I was pretty close."

12LVE Destroyed Apple products project, San Francisco, America - Dec 2010

Title
The Man Who Shot, Burned and Ran A Train Over His Apple Products
If an iPod is on your Christmas list look away now - an artist has shot, burned, hammered and sawed his way through a range of Apple products.
Heartless Michael Tompert even ran over a selection of iPods with a TRAIN.
San Francisco-based Michael spent months purchasing the doomed products, which range from 2008's colourful range of iPods to the sought-after 2010 iPad
He hooked up with photographer friend Paul Fairchild to capture the end results of various kill methods.
Methods of destruction varied by product. A MacBook Air was decorated with nine neat bulletholes courtesy of a 9mm Heckler & Koch handgun, while a Magic Mouse was sliced up with a handsaw.
And Michael even took the drastic action of placing seven iPod Nanos on the tracks in the path of a Caltrain Diesel Locomotive.
But it was the iPad that proved the hardest to kill. Described by Michael as "practically indestructible", it shrugged off blows from an 8lb sledgehammer before finally meeting it's maker (Steve Jobs?) after its insides were heated with a soldering torch until it exploded.
Michael got the idea for the project after he bought his two sons an iPod Touch each for Christmas. The boys started to fight over one of the mp3 players which had a certain game installed.
His patience finally snapping, Michael grabbed one of the iPods and smashed it on the ground, to the amazement of his children.
"I had given my kids an iPod Touch so they would be happy and love me. But when the argument started I just grabbed it and smashed it in front of them because it was just a thing.
"It was still going and the screen was all liquid, it was kind of fascinating...

Amazing close-up pictures show deadly beauty of mantises, Costa Brava, Spain - 07 Sep 2010
With bulbous eyes and their strange stick-like bodies, these mantises look like creatures from another planet. Perched on the tiny stem of a plant, one insect enjoys a lunch of tiny yellow aphids. Another picture shows a mantis about to pounce on an unwitting butterfly and one incredible shot even shows the creatures in larvae form, not much bigger than a thorn. These incredible close-ups were snapped by wildlife enthusiast Jimmy Hoffman. The 50-year-old scours the vegetation around his home in the Costa Brava, Spain, looking for the insects. He said: "I've been interested in nature since I was a child and I've always had an eye for wildlife, especially insects. "Praying mantids are my favourite because of their special predatory behaviour, shapes and colours".

HAVE THEY OR HAVEN'T THEY? - PLASTIC FANTASTIC
Have they or haven't they? That's the age old question when it comes to celebs and plastic surgery.
Fame can often be a young person's game so it's little surprise that some stars decide that the act of growing old gracefully needs a little help.
A nip here and a tuck there to give nature a helping hand is practically de rigueur when you live your life on a cinema screen or in the glare of a paparazzo's camera.
These stars have all prompted speculation due to their changing faces - from nipped in nostrils and plumped up pouts, to ironed out wrinkles and crow's feet corrections.
Some go for the subtle look, leaving it unclear whether their fresh new look is the work of a scalpel or simply 'healthy living'.
Such coyness means that snaps of stars such as Goldie Hawn, Madonna, Meg Ryan and Posh Spice are regularly speculated over.
Whether the rest of these stars have or haven't gone under the knife? It's between them and their surgeon.
One thing is for sure though - these celebs are now all looking suspiciously plastic fantastic.
But can you really expect any different when it comes to the knifestyles of the rich and famous?

CURRYWURST CRAZE: GERMAN SAUCY SAUSAGE DISH GETS OWN MUSEUM
Germany's favourite fast food has been immortalised in its very own museum - the Deutsches Currywurst Museum.
Located in Berlin, the museum is a sausage shrine dedicated to all things currywurst - sliced hot pork sausage swimming in a curry-tomato sauce.
Currywurst is as German as pizza is Italian, hot dogs are American, and fish and chips British.
With sauce recipes that vary from city to city and even fast food stand to fast food stand, in Berlin alone around 70 million currywursts are consumed every year.
The new museum opened in August 2009 to commemorate the dish's 60th birthday.
It explores all aspects of the traditional fare, as well as doling out samples of the tasty favorite to hungry visitors.
Exhibits include sausage sofas, a curry "spice chamber" and a movie montage of all-time currywurst cameos.
According to the museum the currywurst craze can be traced back to post-war Berlin in 1949, when the city had been left devastated from the war.
At the time the dish was known as "poor man's steak" because most Germans couldn't afford a proper piece of meat.
According to legend it was a German housewife called Herta Heuwer who first rustled up the dish after getting her hands on some English curry from British soldiers.
She started sellling her dish from a street stand on the fringes of what was to become Berlin's red-light district and it quickly became a favourite with locals.
At its height Mrs Heuwer's stand was selling some 10,000 servings per week and she later opened a small restaurant that operated until 1974.
Her success saw imitators spring up across the ...
