Eunice Shriver Dies At 88
EUNICE SHRIVER DIES AT 88
Eunice Shriver, sister of JFK, has died at the age of 88.
The mother of Maria Shriver Schwarzenegger had been ill for some time and had been admitted to Cape Cod Hospital in Massachusetts after suffering several strokes.
Sister to Senator Edward 'Ted' Kennedy, Eunice was known for her extensive work with the disabled, having founded a world movement for rights of the mentally handicapped in 1962, which would eventually develop into the Special Olympics.
All this was inspired by the predicament of her older sister Rosemary Kennedy, who was left severely mentally disabled after a prefrontal lobotomy intended to correct behavioural problems cut away vital parts of her brain.
Eunice Shriver, whose husband Sargent organized the US Peace Corps under his brother-in-law's administration, started a special camp at her home in suburban Maryland outside Washington DC in 1962.
The intention was to "explore" the capabilities of "adults with intellectual disabilities" for sports and physical activities, according to the Special Olympics' website.
In 1968, just weeks after the assassination of another brother, Robert, who was running for the Democratic presidential nomination, Shriver launched the first International Special Olympics Summer Games.
They attracted 1,000 individuals with intellectual disabilities from 26 US states and Canada to compete in track and field and swimming.
By 2008, the Special Olympics celebrated its 40th anniversary, drawing nearly 3 million athletes from more than 180 countries to the event that followed the regular Olympic Games in Beijing.
Shriver's influence on her brother, the former president, is credited with the push in 1963 to pass the first law in US history to protect and support the rights of the mentally disab...

Uzbekistan Portrait of a Nation
A Uzbek woman sits in a car, Tuesday, May 1, 2007, in Samarkanda, Uzbekistan.
In 1991 Uzbekistan emerged as a sovereign country after more than a century of Russian rule - first as part of the Russian empire and then as a component of the Soviet Union. Uzbekistan is the most populous Central Asian country and has the largest armed forces. There is no real internal opposition and the media is tightly controlled by the state. A UN report has described the use of torture as "systematic". Following the 11 September attacks on the US, Uzbekistan won favour with Washington by allowing its forces a base in Uzbekistan, affording ready access across the Afghan border. US aid increased for a time. But human rights observers said the international community was failing to respond adequately to the many reported cases of abuse and torture. A bus on the way to Moynaq, northern Uzbekistan, Thursday, May 3, 2007, where the Aral Sea once was. Forty years ago, Moynaq was a busy fishing port where the waters of the Aral Sea lapped up against the shoreline.
Today the waters have receded so much, that there is not a drop as far as the eye can see.
When the former Soviet Union diverted the Ama Dariya and the Syrdariya - the rivers which fed the Aral Sea - to grow cotton in the desert, they created an ecological and human disaster. (FOTO: DUKAS/WORLDPICTURENEWS)

Some of the world's top stars and most popular films battled it out last night for honours at the 2008 National Movie Awards. Taking place at London's Royal Festival Hall, and hosted by actor James Nesbitt, all of the award winners were decided by fans themselves in a huge nationwide poll. Mamma Mia! was the main winner of the night after being named best musical. Its star Meryl Streep also beat off competition from the likes of Nicole Kidman, Sarah Jessica Parker and Cate Blanchett to win the best female award. The Dark Knight triumphed over Iron Man, Hancock and The Incredible Hulk to be named best superhero. However, Christian Bale missed out on being voted best male with that honour going to Johnny Depp for Sweeney Todd. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull was named best action/adventure. Juno took the best comedy prize and Disney/Pixar's WALL-E was named best family film.

A FANTASY OF COLOUR AT BODY PAINTING AWARDS
Body art enthusiasts from around the world have descended on Auckland to take part in the prestigious New Zealand Body Art Awards 2009.
New Zealand's Body Art and Special Effects industry is currently one of the leaders in the world when it comes to creating fantastical creations for some of Hollywood's biggest blockbusters.
The annual body art awards is a showcase for this industry and this year's 'Fantasia Asia' theme brought a rich flavour of colour, music and dance to the Bruce Mason Centre in Takapuna.
Competitors and their models at the show featured in a number of different categories, including hand painted, special effects, world of fluorescent and a Maori myths & fantasies section.
The day saw hunchbacked scaly swamp monsters, futuristic androids, and ethereal other worldly creatures all parade across a continual catwalk.
Five times Oscar award winner and head judge Richard Taylor comments:
"I look forward to seeing the NZ Body Art Awards continue to grow into a truly international event that will bring world wide focus on the artists and practitioners working in this most unique medium. (FOTO:DUKAS/REX)

Model mom HEIDI SAMUEL is back at work and filming a Porsche commercial in Downtown
Los Angeles, 2009-12-3 / 'Project Runway' host and 'Victoria's Secret' model HEIDI SAMUEL is back at work and towering on sky high Yves Saint Laurent high heels while shooting a commercial for the new Porsche Panamera Limousine in Downtown Los Angeles. Just a month after giving birth to her fourth child, HEIDI looked phenomenal in a black pencil skirt and a waving loose sheer tunic (maybe to conceal some barely visible post-baby-pounds?). HEIDI obviously enjoyed beeing pampered on set by her hairstylist, make-up stylist and the important man, who is holding the umbrella... © Copyright 2009, Most Wanted Pictures, Inc. | Tarzana | CA 91356 | USA | photo@mostwantedpictures.net (FOTO:DUKAS/MOST WANTED PICS)
