Prince William and Kate to Ride in Diana's Wedding Carriage
With little more than a month to the British royal wedding, preparations are frantically under way to ensure an immaculate turnout for the horses and carriages that will form the regal procession through London's streets, the centerpiece of the day's regal festivities.
Behind closed doors at the Royal Mews, ornate coaches were being polished on Monday ahead of the nuptials of Prince William and Kate Middleton on 29 April.
The Mews, located next to Buckingham Palace, houses the royal collection of carriages and limousines used by the monarchy on state occasions and special celebrations.
Centre stage is the fairytale Glass Coach, a shining dark maroon carriage with crimson and gold detail, dating from 1881. The coach has been used on several occasions by royal brides on their journeys to be married, including Lady Diana Spencer, on her way to wed Prince Charles in 1981.
The carriage has a fixed roof designed to keep the rain at bay and will be used by Prince William and his new bride on their return journey from Westminster Abbey to Buckingham Palace in case of inclement weather.
Workers on Monday subjected the coach to a thorough polishing, cleaning every part, from its wheels to the crown-shaped ornaments on its roof.
Attention to detail is lavished on every aspect of the procession regalia.
Leather horse harnesses, richly decorated with brass insignia, are spotlessly cleaned.
But while horse-drawn coaches have been the typical mode o...

Bird cleans and grooms an Impala, Kruger National Park in South Africa - 09 Jun 2010

A bird cleans an Impala's ear
Bird cleans and grooms an Impala, Kruger National Park
This friendly bird shows why it is known as the beautician of the animal kingdom - as it treats an impala to a spot of free pampering.
The red billed oxpecker clearly thought its wildlife chum could do with a cosmetic touch up and indulges it by cleaning out its ears and playfully tugging on its eyelash.
However, anyone thinking the bird is not charging for the makeover is mistaken, as at the same time the oxpecker is feeding on blood sucking mites it finds in its ear.
The process is called symbiosis - where different species help each other out in order to benefit themselves.
Biologist Jochen Gerlach captured the friendly moment at Kruger National Park in South Africa.
The impala had just finished quenching its thirst at a watering hole in the early morning when the bird, which has a yellow eyering, dropped by to give it a quick groom and snatch a feed.
Mr Gerlach, 33, from Karlsruhe, Germany, said: "The shots were taken at about 7:45am and the impala was drinking at a waterhole.
"Just when it finished drinking an oxpecker arrived, landed at the neck of the impala and did a bit of a beauty treatment.
The oxpecker feeds on ectoparasites like ticks, hence helps the herbivore to get rid of biting arthropods, while benefiting itself from the food 'provided' by the mammal".
An adult red billed oxpecker will feed on about 100 ticks a day.
Mr Gerlach, who took up photography 15 years ago, added: "In South Africa there is some truly fantastic wildlife.
"When photographing animals I always try to catch a special moment in my shots, I'm not satisfied with just a frame-filling shot in nice light conditions.
"I have been fascinated by nature and wildlife as long as I can think.
"The ...

Cambodia is combating its landmine problem - with rats.
After more than two decades of civil war, the kingdom is one of the most landmine-affected countries in the world.
Now they hope to sniff away their past thanks to rodents that are able to detect the buried threats.
Photojournalist Claudio Montesano Casillas visited the affected area this month (April) to capture the so-called Hero Rats in action.

An architecture competition that hopes to build lives for humans in space and in the sea has been launched.
The International Future Architecture competition asks entrants to imagine a life where water and space would be populated.
Organisers The Jacques Rougerie Foundation say that the Earth's growing population and a potential sea level rise creates the need for new ideas about where humans can live.
Highlights of previous entries include Neck of the Moon, by El Hadi Jazairy, which sees space debris in the orbital environment compacting into a new 'second moon' called Laika.
Another lunar idea was Moon Origin Point by Miloje Krunic; an autonomous habitat for up to 20 million people designed to utilse the Moon's "abundant mineral resources".
