Is This The Most Amazing Selfie Ever: Meteor Explodes Over Campsite Self-Portrait
In the week that 'selfie' was named word of the year by Oxford Dictionaries, this must be the most spectacular self-portrait ever taken.
Photographer Scott Rinckenberger wanted to capture a picture of himself and a friend on their last night of camping in the California wilderness on 7 November.
But when Scott set the timer on his camera and scurried back to his camping stool he had no idea that a METEOR would explode at exactly the right time and in the correct place in his picture.
Scott was enjoying his final evening of a project which had seen him shooting autumn landscapes in the American West. But he had been feeling disappointed as he hadn't created a truly great shot.
To capture the moment, he set his camera up on a tripod on top of his truck and joined his friend Hayden back at the campfire.
His picture, which he believes could be a billions to one occurrence, captured a meteor which saw social media light up with the sighting. Local news reported the meteor streaking across California at around 8pm.
The meteor was likely associated with the South Taurids meteor shower that has been active in November and made meteor sightings four or five times as likely. The debris is coming from Comet Encke, which is currently passing through the solar system.
Local News Video:: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kBf95Ds2nrk
Scott explains: "I've been shooting photos for 20 years. I've made my living in the profession for the last 15. I can count on one hand the number of times that everything lined up perfectly and a truly rare image...

Meteor and northern lights over Britain - 2012

Milky Way over Clattingshaws Loch, Scotland
View From Scotland: The Milky Way Meteor
A British photographer has captured the jaw-dropping moment a meteor streaked across a Scottish loch.
Thomas Heaton managed to grab his camera in time when the awesome sight trailed through the night sky.
Social media was a-twitter with sightings of the meteor when it appeared over the UK on Friday 21 September.
Members of the public reached for their cameraphones to try and photograph or video the rare sight, but Thomas was in the right place at the right time; stargazing at Galloway Forest, the darkest area in mainland Britain and as the first 'Dark Sky Park' in the UK.
Thomas, from Whitley Bay, explains: "I was one of a handful who managed to photograph this dazzling astronomic light show and it just so happened that I was placed in the UK's number one dark spot.
"It was 10.54pm and me and my missus were star gazing at Galloway Forest Park when the largest meteor I could ever imagine seeing flew straight above our head.
"My first thought was a plane crash, as it lit up the whole area. I quickly realised it was a comet and grabbed my camera to take a quick snap.
"Bare in mind this was taken at 30 seconds exposure with a 10mm lens. This thing was awesome."
People from across northern England, Scotland and Northern Ireland reported bright objects moving across the sky and immediately took to social media sites like Twitter to report their sightings.
Jason Townsend wrote on Facebook: "I saw it at 10:55 this evening going over Cumbria. It was amazing, bright, looked like a bunch of stars shooting through the sky. Couldn't get me phone out quick enough to get a pic."
Graham Telford wrote from Leeds: "To be honest, at first I thought it was a couple of planes too close together, but they were all on identical l...
