The overwhelming scale of loss in Brazil's floods
In the state of Rio Grande do Sul, authorities are struggling to find shelter for half a million displaced people as a health crisis looms.

In Canoas, more than 100,000 of its 347,000 inhabitants have been displaced, according to city officials.

Many affected by the floods who were left homeless camp on the city's viaducts, such as one over the BR116, at the entrance to the city. São Leopoldo, a city in the metropolitan region of Porto Alegre, is another of the cities that were hit by the rains in Rio Grande do Sul. There, neighborhoods, such as the Rio dos Sinos neighborhood, are still under water. Where the water minimally receded and there was the possibility of returning to their homes, some victims of this flood returned to see the extent of the damage and begin cleaning.

  • Can southern Brazil's deadly floods spur the shift to green energy?

Can southern Brazil's deadly floods spur the shift to green energy?
Months after devastating rains displaced 420,000 people in Rio Grande do Sul, an unusual consensus has formed around the need for a faster transition to renewables.

Southern Brazil - like the rest of the country - is an outstanding model of adopting clean energy. According to the energy ministry's report last year on the National Energy Balance, more than 80% of Brazil's electricity already comes from renewables.

Elisandro Dutra Glubert, 38, a construction foreman, has lost count of how many people and animals he has rescued as a volunteer. But when he entered his home and saw the destruction caused by the flood for the first time, he was moved. Today, in addition to rescuing people, he supplies water, food and rations to people who have not left their homes. Sao Leopoldo, a city in the metropolitan region of Porto Alegre, is another city that was hit by the rains in Rio Grande do Sul. There, neighbourhoods, such as the Rio dos Sinos neighbourhood, are still under water. Affected by the floods, displaced people are camping on overpasses in the city. Brazil is reeling from catastrophic floods. What went wrong - and what does the future hold?
In the country's south, up to half of the annual predicted rain fell in just 10 days - the third such event in a year. Experts say it is time to plan for a new normal.

Extreme weather of Brazil's southernmost state twice last year. In September 2023, Muçum and its nearly 5,000 inhabitants were at the centre of the devastation caused by floods.
